New Paltz, NY — In its first non-conference matchup after the conclusion of regular-season SUNYAC play, the State University of New York at New Paltz suffered a 3-0 loss against the Montclair Red Hawks Wednesday.
Despite outshooting the visitors 23-7, the Hawks (10-8) could not finish their 14 on-goal opportunities against Red Hawks (6-11).
SUNY New Paltz had the first scoring chance within the opening minute of play, as a foul by Montclair handed the Hawks a penalty corner.
Miranda Britton took the corner and
Rachel Tama got a shot off the opportunity, but the try went wide. The hosts earned three more penalty corners in the following five minutes, but none could be translated into a goal. On the day, the Hawks registered twelve corners, compared to the Red Hawks' two.
The defensive efforts by SUNY New Paltz in the first period stood strong, not allowing Montclair to get any shots off. However, the Red Hawks were able to get past the backline in the second. In the 22nd minute of play, Montclair took their first shot of the second, which found its way into the back of the Hawks' net. The goal sparked an offensive run for the Red Hawks and they put up three shots in the next six minutes, with the third one getting past SUNY New Paltz's defense for Montclair's second unanswered goal of the game.
The Red Hawks continued their scoring streak in the third quarter, when only two minutes into the period, they scored their third of the game. Following a foul from the Hawks, Montclair was given a penalty stroke, one which they finished to elevate their lead to 3-0.
Although it had more shot opportunities than the visitors in the time that remained, SUNY New Paltz could not respond to the Red Hawks' extended lead and the buzzer sounded with Montclair victorious, 3-0.
Tama led offensively, putting up 10 shots with six on goal.
Ashley McGough followed with 7 shots and four on frame, while
Meghan Gunning took three shots with all on target.
Gail Comiskey registered 60 minutes of play on the day and corralled three saves.
The Hawks return to North Turf Field on Nov 1 for their senior day game against the Vassar Brewers, honoring the seven departing seniors. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
