Oswego, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz lost to the Oswego Lakers on the road Friday in straight sets (25-17, 25-19, 25-13).
Despite creating 127 total attack attempts, the Hawks (8-8) were unable to finish successfully, as they made 30 errors and posted a -0.31 hitting percentage. The Lakers (12-3) only had three more recorded kills than SUNY New Paltz, but only suffered 11 errors.
Oswego earned the opening kill of the match, but
Reagan Dyba responded with a kill assisted by
Lola Konopa. The Hawks were able to stay with the Lakers for the first few points of the set, but Oswego tore away with a five-point run capped off with an ace, elevating the hosts' lead to 14-6.
SUNY New Paltz earned the following four points off of Oswego errors, but the Lakers held on to the lead. The hosts confirmed the first set win with a six-point run to take the first 25-17, with all but one of the last six points being attack errors by the Hawks.
In the second, Oswego opened with the first point again, but SUNY New Paltz regained the lead early on, at one point holding a 7-4 advantage following three straight aces by
Kim Braun punctuated by a kill from Dyba.
However, Oswego's offense could not be stopped and went on multiple runs to regain the lead, and another six-point tear gave them a 14-9 advantage. The Hawks could not recover from the run, and the set ended 25-19 in the Lakers' favor.
And in the third set, it was once again, Oswego from the beginning.
Between SUNY New Paltz errors and the Lakers' offensive production, the hosts jumped out to a 7-0 lead, which was eventually interrupted by a kill from Dyba. Oswego wasn't done as it scored four more to gain an 11-1 advantage over the Hawks. SUNY New Paltz tried to chip away at the large deficit, but the Lakers continued to score. Another five-point hot streak gave Oswego a 19-7 lead, the 12-point advantage being their largest of the day. The third ended with the Lakers on top, and the Hawks suffered their first conference loss of the year.
Underclassmen led the Hawks with Dyba scoring 10 kills on the day, followed by
Nora Keating, who added five. Dyba also tallied 10 digs during the match behind
Jordyn Lewis, who garnered 13. Braun led in assists (10) and aces (4).
The Hawks stay on the road to face SUNY Canton on Saturday. Game time against the Roos is scheduled for 1 p.m
