Canton, NY — After falling on the road to Oswego Friday, the State University of New York New Paltz rebounded with a 3-0 sweep of Canton Saturday on the road.
The Hawks (9-8 overall, 1-1 SUNYAC) took the 3-0 victory, 25-23, 26-24, 25-15 after hitting .241 while scoring more points (64-37) and totaling more kills (41-39), aces (15-6), blocks (8-2), assists (37-24) and digs (54-52) than the Roos (7-13, 0-2) on their home floor.
SUNY New Paltz held a 20-18 lead in the first following three-straight kills from
Lexi Stragalas and
Reagan Dyba. Canton answered with four-straight points to re-gain the lead, but a kill from Stragalas off an assist from
Kim Braun allowed the Hawks to side-out, giving the ball to Stragalas on the ensuing serve resulting in another kill by Dyba and an ace to push the score, 23-22 in favor of the visitors. The Roos got a point back following a Hawks hitting error, but SUNY New Paltz closed out the first with kills from Dyba and
Nora Keating to gain a 1-0 advantage.
Canton held set point in the second period, 24-23 after scoring three consecutive points following a two-point lead by the Hawks, but an attacking error allowed SUNY New Paltz to side out and tie the set.
Maria Weigand then served for ace with Stragalas putting the finishing touches on the 2-0 lead with a big solo block to end the set, 26-24.
An 8-0 run midway through the third decided the final stanza for the Hawks with
Courtney Meyer serving through the stretch, totaling four aces along the way to help her team to a commanding, 20-11 lead. An ace by Stragalas eventually got the Hawks to match point at 24-13 with Dyba sealing the sweep on a kill from Braun two points later.
Dyba finished with a career-high 17.5 points on a career-high 16 kills on 41 attempts, hitting .244 with one ace, a block and three digs. Stragalas followed with 12.5 points, totaling six kills, an assist, three aces, a game-high five blocks and five digs. Keating added seven kills, three blocks and two digs. Lewis led the team defensively with 15 digs to go along with four aces and an assist with Braun facilitating the offense with 32 assists, while recording three kills and 13 digs. Meyer finished with six digs while tying a career-high with six aces.
SUNY New Paltz return home next weekend, hosting SUNYAC rivals SUNY Morrisville Friday at 6 p.m. and SUNY Cortland Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Hawk Center.
