Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners Monday with Hawks senior outfielder
Michael Ascanio named as the SUNYAC Baseball Athlete of the Week.
Ascanio earns his first weekly honor of his career, as he carried the Hawks to a perfect 4-0 week, highlighted by a prolific weekend against his former team on the road Friday and Saturday. In a 14-6 non-conference victory over Vassar Wednesday, he added an RBI base hit with two runs scored and a stolen base. In Game 1 against the Cardinals, Ascanio brought momentum back on his team's side, as he smacked an RBI base hit to get SUNY New Paltz first run aboard. Ascanio finished the game going 4-for-5 with two runs, a double, three RBI, a walk and two stolen bases. He capped his weekend by going 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, a walk and a stolen base as the Hawks rolled to a 14-2 eight-inning win over the Cardinals.
On the week, Ascanio produced nine hits, eight runs, two doubles, nine RBI with walks and six stolen bases, while hitting .474 with an on-base-percentage of .545 and slugging percentage of .579. He was perfect in the field, as the reigning All-Region gold glover made nine total catches and nine put outs for a 1.000 fielding percentage manning center field.
