SUNY New Paltz Baseball Earns Four Selections to ABCA All-Region III Team

Kreider Named to first team ABCA and D3Baseball All-Region III; Ascanio named to second team ABCA and D3Baseball, while Pericolosi and Weed earned spots on ABCA second team list

New Paltz, NY — The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) announced its annual All-Region honorees Tuesday with the Hawks earning four selections to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region III team.

Tommy Kreider (senior, second base/New City, NY/Clarkstown South HS) highlighted the list for the State University of New York New Paltz who became the first player in program history to be named to three consecutive first team selections, earning a spot on both the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region III First Team and D3Baseball.com First Team list. Joining him were senior outfielders Michael Ascanio, Anthony Pericolosi and sophomore pitcher Michael Weed who all captured a spot on ABCA/Rawlings Second Team, while Ascanio was also named to the second team D3Baseball.com All-Region III Team.

Kreider's legacy continued even after his last swing for the orange and blue, cementing his place further as the best player to ever compete for the program. The New City, NY native proved himself once again as one of the best players in the league, as the Preseason All-American led his team back to the SUNYAC Tournament for consecutive season for just the third time ever.

Fresh off of being named as the team's first Bob Wallace SUNYAC Player of the Year, Kreider puts himself in position to be named to the All-American list for the second time in his career with the first team all-region nod. The senior was the only player for the Hawks to start all 42 games played, manning second base while playing some short stop when needed. Kreider set single season program records in runs (63), which beat his own record set in 2024 with 62 in four less games played, doubles (19), tying the total he set last season, and stolen bases (37), destroying the formally held record of 26.

Additionally, Kredier hit .439 on the year with an OPS of 1.206, slugging percentage of .665 and on-base-percentage of .541 with 72 hits, 35 RBI, 109 total bases and 26 extra-base hits. His batting average landed third on the single season program record board, just behind his 2024 total (.463), while his slugging percentage and on-base-percentage finished sixth and second, respectively, with the former category notching a career-high for the Clarkstown South HS alum. Defensively, Kreider also etched his name on the single-season honors list as he totaled a career-high 108 assists to finish second-most in the category, which also registered as a career-high for the first-team all-region select.

Michael Ascanio (senior, outfield/Armonk, NY/Byram Hills HS) came off a breakout junior campaign that set up a career season in his final stint with SUNY New Paltz. A third-team all-region select last year, Ascanio was named as the program's first ever All-Region Defensive Team as well. Ascanio's prowess in the field continued, as he proved himself as one of the best two-way players in the country as he upped his numbers in the batter's box as well.

Hitting in the heart of the lineup, Ascanio re-set the team's single season RBI record, knocking in a career-high 49 runners home, topping the previous mark set last season by alum Michael Boccarossa (47) in eight less games played.

Starting in all 38 games he appeared in, Ascanio batted .342 with an OPS of .990, slugging percentage of .564 and on-base-percentage of .426 with 31 runs, 51 hits, including 19 extra base hits and a team-leading six home runs with 84 total bases and 16 steals. He set career-highs in batting, OPS, steals and RBI while sitting close to last year's career marks in hits, runs and extra base hits in seven less games played. Defensively, his .991 fielding percentage on 109 chances ranked ninth best in single-season program history, as he added 105 putouts and three assists as he manned center field.

The Armonk, NY native also set a program record with a 27-game hitting streak through the season, as he registered at least a hit in 32 of 38 games he was in the lineup, while adding two hits during SUNY New Paltz's two-game stint in the SUNYAC postseason tournament.

Since stepping foot onto the Hawks baseball program, Anthony Pericolosi (senior, outfield/Rockville Centre, NY/South Side HS) has been a consistent staple in the lineup. After solidifying a lethal offense for a championship run last season, Pericolosi batted cleanup for SUNY New Paltz in his final year of eligibility and closed out his career with his best hitting numbers throughout his tenure. Named to his first All-SUNYAC team this past season, landing on first team, Pericolosi added to his resume with his first career All-Region III pick.

Starting in all 40 games he appeared in at right field for the Hawks, Pericolosi batted .368 with an OPS of 1.011, slugging percentage of .580 and on-base-percentage of .431 with 54 runs, 64 hits, 36 RBI and 13 stolen bases. He set career-highs in hits, runs, batting average, OPS, slugging and stolen bases. His 54 runs scored, 64 hits and 101 total bases are the third most in single-season Hawks history, only behind Kreider, while his five triples were just one shy of the single-season record set back in 2003 by alum Sylvestre Castro. Pericolosi also became the first player for SUNY New Paltz to hit for the cycle, recording a single, double, triple and home run in a 9-3 win over Fredonia April 28.

Defensively, Pericolosi finished the year with a fielding percentage of .980 on 102 chances with 98 putouts and two assists. Although he starred for SUNY New Paltz for just two seasons, Pericolosi is still featured on the program's all-time list, landing third in runs (101), and triples (7), tied sixth in home runs (10) and eighth in RBI (77) and total bases (186).

Michael Weed (sophomore, right-handed pitcher/Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush HS) was a welcome addition to the team this spring, transferring from Division II College of Saint Rose to help solidify SUNY New Paltz's pitching staff. Proving as the team's most consistent arm throughout the year, Weed, alongside rookie right-hander Kiran Paingankar, became just the second and third pitchers selected to the All-SUNYAC team in the last eight years for the Hawks.

Appearing in 12 games and starting 10, Weed led the team in inning's pitched (64.2), complete games thrown (2) and strikeouts (55), while finishing with an ERA of 2.92, WHIP of 1.35 while conceding just 66 hits, 21 earned runs and 21 walks on a team-leading 249 batters faced. He led SUNY New Paltz's pitching staff with six wins, holding a record of 6-2 on the year while keeping opponents to .265 batting average against. His six wins tied for third most in single season program history, while his 249 at-bats faced was tied for fourth most on the team's single-season record books.

Weed's most impressive outing came in his last, delivering for the Hawks to open up the SUNYAC Tournament against NCAA Tournament qualifier Oswego State. The Pine Bush, NY native threw a complete nine innings, while yielding nine hits, three earned runs, three walks and registering a career-high eight strikeouts on 139 pitches thrown.
