New Paltz, NY — Kicking off their regular season with an indisputable rout, The State University of New York New Paltz defeated the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons, 5-0 Friday on South Turf Field.
The Hawks struck within the first five minutes when
Ryan Zindler found fellow sophomore
Brandon Dhanoolal across the box for an easy low shot into the back of the net. Not long after, Zindler netted one of his own, assisted by senior captain
Alex Wyant in the 21st minute.
The hosts continued the positive momentum and fired again, as
Kieran Weber scored off an assist from Dhanoolal in the 26th minute, another sophomore-to-sophomore connection.
Before the end of the half, a scrum near the endline ended with Wyant knocking in a ball from Zindler, which gave the senior his first of the year. The Gryphons could not respond before the horn sounded and the Hawks ended the half up 4-0.
Th

e second period started slow until eight minutes in when Sarah Lawrence suffered back-to-back yellow card penalties, hindering its momentum. Before the Gryphons could execute any offensive sets, SUNY New Paltz struck again. Zindler, once again setting up his teammates, sent a ball to senior
Colin Brant on the frontline. Brant took advantage and finished for his first of the year and the Hawks' fifth of the match.
Sarah Lawrence did not garner a successful opportunity afterwards and their chances were diminished by another yellow card in the 90th minute. The time expired with the Hawks on top, 5-0.
SUNY New Paltz bested the Gryphons during the entire 90 minutes and outshot the visitors 18-5, with 13 tries on net. Zindler led the charge with a goal and three assists in less than 60 minutes played, followed by Dhanoolal and Wyant, who each tacked on a goal and assist. Brant rounded out the score sheet with one goal, while
Joe Washington and
Cody Baker combined for three saves on the day.
The Hawks head on their first road trip of the season to face Springfield College Sunday. Kick off against the Pride is set for 1 p.m.
