New Paltz, NY — Following a winless stretch, the State University of New York at New Paltz ended the lull with a triumphant win over the King's College Monarchs Saturday, shutting out the visitors 5-0.
"We've been on the road for the last two games and we haven't been getting the results we wanted," said Hawks senior forward
Brooke Kelleher. "We've been playing very well as a team the way that we want to play, but the results weren't there and it feels good to be able to come out today on our home turf and deliver the results that we've been waiting for."
Quick out of the gate, SUNY New Paltz (2-2-1) got on the board in only the seventh minute. In the Hawks' offensive third, Kelleher found
Addison Weiner by the far side goalpost and sent the ball through, setting Weiner up for an easy opportunity to bury the cross in the back of the net for the seniors' first of the season.
"Before this game, we've been talking about getting wide," Kelleher said. "Making sure that we stay wide on the outside to play our rondos and be patient waiting for that through ball — we saw that all today."
SUNY New Paltz kept complete control of the game in the midfield, limiting the Monarch's to five shots to the Hawks' 12 in the first half alone. However, Kings' goalkeeper Courtney Monard kept the visitors in the game as the sophomore registered five saves in the first.
However, in the 38th minute, SUNY New Paltz padded its lead with an insurance goal. A free kick landed a ball at
Ashley O'Hara's feet at the frontline, where the junior chipped the ball up perfectly to connect with
Laney Schmitz for a picturesque header goal. With only seven minutes remaining in the half, the Monarchs could not respond and ended the first down 2-0 to the hosts.
But the Hawks weren't done yet.
Only eight minutes into the second, Kelleher took matters into her own hands and ran up the right sideline, keeping possession of the ball. Unassisted, the senior fired a shot into the top left shelf of the net to register SUNY New Paltz's third of the match.
Ten minutes later,
Kennedy Jones added another unassisted goal to the count. After heading up the same sideline as Kelleher had, Jones sent a low ball to the bottom left corner of the cage past Monard, which elevated the Hawks' lead to 4-0.
King's continued to struggle to break through SUNY New Paltz's backline, held down by
Sam Wohlmut,
Grace Lien and
Hannah Wellinger — who all registered over 60 minutes for the Hawks. But before the Monarchs could get one on the board, SUNY New Paltz struck again.
Registering another unassisted goal,
Kara Jahrsdoerfer buried a shot into the bottom right corner of the net for the sophomore's first of her career, and the Hawks' fifth of the game. Jahrsdoerfer was also the fifth unique scorer of the match for SUNY New Paltz.
"It's always a great game when we see multiple people getting on the board, getting points," said Kelleher. "It takes the whole team. It starts from the defense, starts from the goalies, but it feels good to have everyone celebrated today."
The clock expired with the Hawks on top in a dominant fashion, ending victorious 5-0. SUNY New Paltz put up an exceptional 26 shots while landing 14 on frame, and the backline held the Monarchs to only five total shots with four on target.
Kelleher led with a goal and an assist, followed by Jones, Schmitz, Weiner and Jahrsdoerfer, who each tallied a goal for the Hawks.
Jess Centeri registered 68 minutes with one save on the day.
Madelyn Jachimiak closed out the match in net with three saves, tying her career high, in 22 minutes played.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday, when it travels to Long Island to face the Farmingdale State Rams. Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m.
