Buffalo, NY – The SUNY New Paltz Swim program competed in day three of the SUNYAC Championship. The teams competed in the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke and the 1-meter diving event.
Alex Gorzula earned the Hawks first gold medal since 2018, placing first in the men's 400-yard individual medley. Gorzula touched the wall with a time of 4:11.84 out touching the silver medal finisher from Pitt Bradford by over a second and picked up 20 points for the Hawks.
Erin Donovan placed 12
th in the women's 400-yard individual medley with a time of 5:10.58. Donovan added 5 points to the women's score. Jayme fink also picked up some points for the Hawks with a 13
th place finish in the event, earning 4 points with a 5:13.76.
Athena Sage added 2 points to the women's total with a time of 5:55.99, placing 15
th, making the 400IM a very important event for the team.
Jack Samko placed third, earning bronze in the men's 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51:32. Samko earned 16 points for the men.
Hayden Brock and
Deniz Gurcan also collected points for the Hawks. Brock (54:54) finished 15
th, earning 2 points, while Gurcan (56.08) touched 16
th, earning a point.
Alexis Egbert earned a top eight finish in the event, placing seventh with a time of 1:01.89. Egbert picks up 12 points for the blue and orange.
Madeleine Tothero earned a top 16 finish with a time of 1:08.13, and 2 points.
Antonio Vavalle placed third in the men's 200-yard freestyle, earning bronze and 16 points with a time of 1:44.22.
Sophia Bucci placed ninth in the women's 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.70. Bucci picked up 9 points for the Hawks.
Brianna Law touched seventh in the women's 100-yard breststroke with a time of 1:11.92. Law adds 12 points to the women's overall tally.
Mickey Leach placed 16
th in the men's 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.32, earning 1 point for the Hawks.
Fink cracked top 16 in the women's 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:08.05, earning 4 points and a 13
th place finish.
The men's team of Gurcan, Gorzula, Samko and Vavalle touched fifth in the men's 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:33.52, earning 28 points.
The women's team of Fink, Law, Egbert and Bucci touched fifth with a time of 4:19.84 in the women's 400-yard medley relay earning 28 points for the Hawks.
After day three of the competition the women sit in sixth place with 179 points. The men are also in sixth place with 219 points. Prelims start at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Burt Flickinger Center on the campus of Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY.
