New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz rolled to a 23-2 win over visiting Manhattanville Wednesday on North Turf Field.
Several Hawks hit career-highs in the matchup, including
Lexi Atwater (8 ground balls),
Helena Willis (5 draw controls) and
Allison Beattie (7 points), along with a career-first goal for freshman midfielder
Izzy Klein (1 goal, 2 ground balls), but the highlight was senior defender
Sam Wohlmut who not only scored her first career goal, but also set career marks in ground balls (6) and caused turnovers (7) with the latter tying the third most in single game program history.
Willis got the afternoon started three minutes into the game, slipping underneath as the Vailants slid to Beattie driving. Beattie fed Willis who earned a free position as she was hit going to goal and the Binghamton, NY native finished on a bouncer to put her team up. Wohlmut then recorded her first caused turnover two minutes later, leading to a ground ball pick up by
Tiana Zarcone on the ride, resulting in a
Mia Baldinger goal to double the lead.
The Hawks were hit with their first green card in the midfield and Manhattanville capitalized to slice the difference in half. The hosts answered though with four straight goals to end the quarter with the offense spread around, as
Ava Padilla fed a driving Beattie to push the score 3-1 before Willis scored again, stemming on good check on the defensive end by
Lexi Atwater. Atwater then added another on a quick-stick goal off a zipped feed inside from
Samantha DeLucca. The defense led to offense on the following goal, as sophomore
Maddy Luongo stood up her man, forcing a turnover with a ground ball pickup from Wohlmut who pushed to junior defender
Amy Whitman on the break. Whitman found Padilla who lined a pass to Beattie cutting, and the junior snagged a nice catch before finishing to cap an illustrious sequence.

The Valiants were caught offsides to start the second quarter, leading to a green card with Zarcone answering SUNY New Paltz with a man-up goal. Manhattanville then got in the penalty again, called on a dangerous swing and were handed an un releasable yellow. Following a save by Manhattanville's Mary Kopf (8 saves), Wohlmut got her stick on the pass in the midfield and in stride scooped up the loose ball, hustled to push in transition and with numbers took the ball straight to goal, adding a pump fake to move Kopf and scoring her first career goal before jumping into the arms of Baldinger as the rest of the Hawks embraced, igniting the home crowd and hosting bench which led to an immediate Vailants timeout.

SUNY New Paltz continued on its run after the stoppage, as Willis scored again man-down following a turnover by the Valiants in the midfield after a card was given to the Hawks. Manhattanville scored on a free position attempt to stop the running clock, but SUNY New Paltz answered with four goals to end the half. Whitman and Wohlmut helped the Hawks to a running clock with Wohlmut sliding and getting a back check off with Whitman there to clean up for a ground ball before pushing up the field to Beattie who fed DeLucca on a fastbreak goal to get the game to 12-2 with the Hawks holding onto the 10-plus advantage the rest of the way.
Thirteen different Hawks registered at least a point led by Beattie who tied her career-high in points (7) and assists (3) while adding a game-high four goals. Padilla and Atwater followed with six points apiece with Atwater contributing all over the field, totaling a game- and career-high ground balls with eight — which tied for third-most in single game program history — to go along with three caused turnovers and a draw control. Willis added three points, three ground balls and a career- and game-high five draw controls. Luongo tied a career-high two caused turnovers with Whitman adding two caused turnovers, three ground balls and a draw control.
SUNY New Paltz has a tougher test on the schedule in its next matchup Saturday, going on the road to face No. 14 nationally ranked TCNJ in Ewing, New Jersey at 1 p.m.
