Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announced its weekly award winners Monday with Hawks senior defender
Sam Wohlmut named as the SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week.
The accolade is the first of her career for Wohlmut, who boasted illustrious numbers to lead the defense in two games played on the week. She joins Morgan and
Lexi Atwater as previous weekly recipients this season with
Morgan Atwater named as the Defensive Athlete of the Week on Feb. 23.
Wohlmut was the best player on the field for the Hawks this past week. The senior defender scored her first career goal in a win over Manhattanville, helping break up a pass and picking up a ground ball on the ride before taking it the length of the field on the fastbreak to score the unassisted goal. She also tallied career and game-high six ground balls and seven caused turnovers in the game — with the latter ranking third-most in single game program history. She logged a full 60 minutes in the blowout to lead the defense that allowed just two goals on six total shots on goal.
SUNY New Paltz took on No. 14 TCNJ with Wohlmut assigned the Lions top offensive target. The Center Moriches, NY native continued to lead the team in caused turnovers, finishing with a team-high of three while also adding a draw control. She was also crucial in the clear, using her legs to run over the restraining line to give her team possession on their offensive end. She finished the weekend with six ground balls and 10 caused turnovers (no cards) with one goal.
Wohlmut and the Hawks are back in action Wednesday, going on the road to face Kean at 4 p.m.
