Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York Conference (SUNYAC) announced its weekly award winners Monday with Hawks junior defender
Amy Whitman named to her second straight SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week honor.
The accolade is the second of her career for Whitman after being named last week following wins over Kean and Canton. Her selection is the sixth on the year for SUNY New Paltz including its third consecutive and fourth overall defensive player of the week nod.
Whitman was dominant defensively to lead her team to a 12-4 win over visiting Fredonia Saturday. She picked off numerous passes while in the team's zone defense and matched a career-high four caused turnovers in the game. She was active all over the field and totaled a career-high seven ground balls, which also ranked tied for third most in single-season history. The junior captain's presence and voice was critical in containing the Blue Devils offense, which notched just 12 shots, six on goal, for a season-low four goals scored.
On the year, Whitman leads her team with 29 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers with the Hawks allowing an average of seven goals and 10 points against per game, while keeping opponents' shot percentage to .354.
SUNY New Paltz returns to SUNYAC action Tuesday, going on the road to face Potsdam at 4 p.m.
