Canton, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz dominated the hosting Canton Kangaroos Friday afternoon and picked up its first SUNYAC win of the season following the 17-5 victory.
The Hawks improved their record to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC, while Canton dropped to 2-4 and 0-2, respectively.
SUNY New Paltz dominated from the opening whistle, as it entered the half up, 7-1 before a nine-goal third quarter broke the game open. The Hawks held the advantage on shots (49-34) and shots on goal (33-16), but the Roos won the turnover battle (25-24) and tallied more ground balls (46-45) and more faceoff wins (12-11).
Colin Cleary led the way for SUNY New Paltz, as the senior totaled a game-high five goals to set a new career personal best, as the five goals scored tied for third most in single game program history.
Cleary pushed the Hawks ahead 2-0 with about eight minutes left in the first quarter, as he kept the possession alive with a ground ball following a
Jack McLaughlin shot off the post. SUNY New Paltz rode a 4-0 stretch through the quarter, capped on a man-down goal by Fin Smith. Canton coughed up possession with Hawks senior defenseman
Owen Craker there to start his team on the break before finding Smith for the score to register his first career point as he helped push his team up by four with a minute to go in the period.
The Roos broke through the scoreless stretch and put away a goal following the ensuing faceoff win. The Hawks played good defense to start the second quarter, forcing a shot clock violation that led to a Cleary goal on the other end to re-start the offense for the visitors.
Jacob Kenny was hit with a two-minute penalty, resulting in a goalie change for the Hawks.
Zach Novak came in to replace the freshman in net and made a stop with SUNY New Paltz clearing over the midline before calling a timeout. Still man-down, McLaughlin found an opportunity and ripped a shot for his first of the day to push the advantage to 6-1. Cleary scored again before the half ended to create a six-goal cushion at the break.
The offensive barrage was steady in the third quarter for SUNY New Paltz.
Killian Yombor got the stretch started, as he scored off a caused turnover and ground ball pickup by
Sean Cassidy. Yombor then capped the quarter on a man-up goal, assisted by
Nick Darcangelo with two minutes remaining to aid in a 16-2 lead entering the fourth.
McLaughlin scored early in the fourth off a pass from
Blake Hayden to bring the Hawks their largest lead of 15. The Roos tallied late goals to gain some ground, but SUNY New Paltz comfortably ended with the win.
Smith followed Cleary offensively with five points on two goals and three assists, while adding four ground balls. Yombor totaled four goals and three ground balls, but the highlight was junior FOGO
Brendon Lloyd registering his first career goal off a faceoff win to aid in the victory as he was the ninth Hawk to register a point in the game.
Craker led his team defensively with three caused turnovers and three ground balls to go along with his assist.
Luke Walters followed with two caused turnovers and a career- and team-high six ground balls. Kenny finished with seven saves in about 22 minutes in goal, while Novak ended with four.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday, hosting SUNY Oneonta on North Turf Field at 3 p.m.
