Box Score 2 Oneonta, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz Baseball program won both games against the Red Dragons Wednesday. The men won the first game 11-1 in seven innings and the second 10-3.
Game One: Michael Weed pitched the first game, pitching all seven innings. Weed struck out five batters, let up four hits, one walk and one run.
The first run of the game was scored in the top of the fifth.
Louis Kaleb walked, followed by a bunt from
Matt Sarni that but Kaleb on second.
Tommy Poggi and
Wallace Kirkpatrick were hit by pitches, bringing Kaleb home for run number one.
Garrett Grathwohl singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw, earning two RBIs.
Fabian Apicella reached on a fielder's choice that tagged Kirkpatrick out at home.
Joe Richetti reached on a fielder's choice and earned an RBI as Grathwohl scored.
Tommy Benfer was hit by a pitch and Richetti advanced to second but were both left on base. The Hawks went into the bottom of the fifth up 4-0.
Sarni walked in the top of the sixth and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Poggi singled to center and earned an RBI. Kirkpatrick walked and Poggi advanced to second. Grathwohl reached on a fielder's choice. Apicella earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly that put the Hawks up 6-0.
Oneonta scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
The Hawks ended the game with a big seventh inning. Benfer reached first on an error. Kaleb walked and Benfer was caught stealing. Sarni singled to center field and Kaleb advanced to third. Sarni stole second. Kaleb scored unearned as Poggi reached first on an error. Kirkpatrick doubled batting in Sarni and Poggi. Grathwohl doubled to center field batting in Kirkpatrick. Apicella earned the final RBI in game one with a double down the left field line that secured the 11-1 win for the Hawks.
Game Two: Connor Catania started game two on the mound for the Hawks pitching 4.0 innings. Catania struck out four batters, let up four hits, one run and two walks.
Sarni got the ball rolling early with a single to right field in the top of the 1
st, followed by him stealing second. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and was batted in by Grathwohl with a single to right field. Apicella reached first by an error and Grathwohl advanced to second. Richetti was walked and the men were left on base at the turn of the inning.
The Hawks scored their second run in the top of the second. Kaleb doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sarni singled batting in Kaleb. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball but was left on base.
The Red Dragons scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the second.
In the top of the fourth Kaleb started the inning with a walk. Poggi reached first on a fielder's choice that tagged Kaleb out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kirkpatrick singled to right field and Poggi scored the third run of the game.
Richetti started the fifth inning with a single to right field. Benfer was hit by a pitch and Richetti stole second. Scarabino was put in to pinch run for Benfer and scored when
Luca Sieger hit a double down the left field line. Sieger also batting in Richetti, earning two RBIs and putting the Hawks up 5-0 over the Red Dragons.
Johnny McHugh made his way out to the mound in the bottom of the fifth, pitching 4.0 innings. McHugh struck out three batters, let up three walks, two runs and five hits.
Oneonta scored their second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Richetti started the top of the seventh with a walk. Scarabino reached first on an error with a bunt and Richetti advanced to third. Sieger singled to right field batting in Richetti. Sarni singled to left field batting in Scarabino unearned. With Sieger on third, Sarni stop second. Both men were batted in by Kirkpatrick with a double down the right field line.
Oneonta scored their third and final run in the bottom of the seventh.
Sarni singled to right field in the top of the ninth. Kirkpatrick followed suit and Sarni advanced to third. Sarni scored the final run of the game on a wild pitch, securing the Hawks 10-3 win.
Dylan Hayes came out from the bullpen to pitch the final inning of the game, striking out two batters and letting up three hits.
The Hawks head to Oswego for a three-game series starting Friday at 3p.m. in Oswego, NY.
