Smith averaged 12.17 assists per set to lead the New Paltz men's volleyball team to the NCAA Division III title from Friday-Sunday at Nazareth College's Kidera Gymnasium. It marks the first-ever national team title in the history of New Paltz. Smith, who was named the NCAA Tournament MVP, also hit .250 (9-3-24) and averaged 1.17 digs per set, 0.75 kills per set, 0.42 blocks per set and 0.17 service aces per set on the week. He dished out 40 assists and added a block assist in the team's 3-1 quarterfinal-round win over the No. 15 Wentworth Institute of Technology on Friday. Smith then handed out 55 assists and served up two aces in the Hawks' 3-1 triumph over the No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday. Finally, on Sunday, Smith doled out 51 assists and completed the double-double with 11 digs, as New Paltz topped No. 2 Springfield College, 3-1, in the title match. Smith finished the season ranked eighth in Division III in assists per set (10.49). New Paltz finished its season at 33-2 overall (8-0 UVC), going unbeaten against Division III teams and ending the year on a 32-match winning streak.
