Hawks Ease Past Oneonta in 2010-11 Home Opener

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team (1-0) saw numerous contributors, as the Hawks defeated SUNY Oneonta (1-1), 137-63, in the 2010-11 home opener for New Paltz Friday afternoon at the Elting Pool.

Junior Pete Nastasi (Monroe, N.Y.) was the lone double-event winner for the Hawks. He touched first in the 200 freestyle at 1:50.61 and won comfortably in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:04.29.

Junior Marc Battisti (East Meadow, N.Y.) paced the 1000 freestyle field (10:47.10), while senior Billy Papetti (Long Beach, N.Y.) turned in a sub-23 50 freestyle (22.76) to take first in the “splash and dash.” Freshman Pat Rankin (Beachwood, N.J.) and junior Jeremy Borrelli (Vestal, N.Y.) also snared first-place finishes, topping the 200 breaststroke (2:26.74) and 100 freestyle (51.12) fields, respectively.

The Hawks also walked away with a pair of relay victories. The 400 medley relay contingent of junior Corey Lomas (Wilbraham, Mass.), Rankin, senior Rob Webb (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Papetti registered a time of 3:47.78 to take first, while Papetti, Borrelli and seniors Matt Demerest (Long Beach, N.Y.) and Pat Rathbun (Long Valley, N.J.) topped the 200 freestyle relay field with a 1:31.15 mark.

New Paltz looks forward to facing a tough U.S. Coast Guard Academy team tomorrow, as the Hawks travel to New London, Conn., to battle the Bears. The first event is scheduled to commence at 1 p.m.
