NEW PALTZ, NY- Rose Dovi went 6-for-8 in the doubleheader with seven RBI and six runs scored, including a homerun and three triples to help the Hawks to a two-game sweep of Mount Saint Mary College Wednesday evening on Mary Gray Deane Field. The Hawks improve to 11-7 overall and return to Mary Gray Deane Field on Saturday against Oneonta at 1 p.m. for a conference doubleheader.
In game one,
Rose Dovi came to the plate in the bottom of the first and blasted a three run homer to give the Hawks the early 3-0 lead.
Jillian Gallagher and
Victoria Kyle each had a single before the homer.
In the top of the second, the Blue Knights tied the score up with three runs of their own. With one out, Amy Romito reached on an error and Danielle Sedia followed with a single. Next batter, Victoria DeMarco doubled into the gap scoring Romito from second and Sedia from first. Liz Carlson followed DeMarco's double with a triple to tie the game.
The Hawks wasted no time taking the lead back in the bottom half of the inning.
Dale Cornelius led the inning off with her second double of the year and would later score on a Kyle single with two outs. Kyle would score on the next batter as Dovi blasted her first of two triples of the game in to deep center field to give the Hawks a 5-3 lead.
The Hawks tacked on two more in the bottom of the third all with two-outs in the inning.
Erin Fitzpatrick drew a walk and Cornelius with her second double the game, drove home Fitzpatrick from first. Cornelius would score on the next batter when
Cassie Barcavage hard shot to the first baseman was missed handled.
Courtney Costello held the Blue Knights scoreless in the third and fourth inning, allowing the Hawks to increase their lead to 8-2 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. The run was scored by Dovi off of
Melyssa Cilmi first sacrifice fly of the year.
The Mount would get one back in the sixth when Sedia scored on an RBI groundout by Carlson.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Hawks scored their ninth and tenth run of the game when Dovi led the inning off with a triple and would score two batters later on a Cilmi single. Cornelius drove home Cilmi with a single of her own.
Gallagher finished 2-for-4 with one run and Kyle was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Cilmi was 1-for-3 with one run and two RBI and Cornelius was perfect, going 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Costello pitched four innings, allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits and striking out two for a no-decision. Gallagher earned the win on the mound, pitching the final three innings and allowing one run, none earned, on two hits and striking out two.
Jackie Governale was 2-for-3 and Destiny Scott finished 2-for-4 to lead the Blue Knights from the plate. DeMarco was 1-for-3 with one run and two RBI and Carlson was 1-for-3 with two RBI as The Mount falls to 8-10 with the doubleheader loss.
Caitlin Maynes took the loss on the mound, as she allowed 10 runs, eight earned, on 14 hits in six innings of work.
In the nightcap, after two scoreless innings by both teams, the Blue Knights scored two in the third to open the scoring. With one out in the inning, Scott and Maynes drew back-to-back walks and Christine DelPiano drove home Scott from second on an RBI double. Maybes advanced to third, but was held up with an excellent threw from the outfield to the cut-off. DelPiano would score on the next batter as Sarah Johnson fly out ball was dropped.
The Hawks put up a six spot in the bottom of the inning to take control.
Elizabeth Tong led the inning off with a walk and Gallagher followed with a single. After a strikeout, Dovi ripped a triple of the wall, scoring Tong and Gallagher to tie the game, 2-2. The Hawks continued to rally with an RBI single from
Samantha Barra and
Melissa Liotta. The next batter, Fitzpatrick took Carlson deep to left center field for her second homer of the year as the Hawks took a 6-2 lead with the two-run homer.
The Mount took the lead though with two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth. In the fourth, DeMarco doubled home Sedia and Governale after Governale led the inning off with a single and Sedia reached on a fielder's choice. In the fifth, Governale singled to score Johnson and DeMarco singled two batters later to score Romito. The third run came with a bases loaded walk from Scott.
The Hawks finished strong though, scoring two in the bottom of the fifth and sixth. Cilmi drove home Dovi on a double after she led the inning off with a single. Cilmi would score on the next batter as
Elizabeth May singled up the middle. In the sixth, Gallagher scored after a miscue by the Blue Knights and Dovi drove home Kyle for the second run.
Gallagher went 2-for-4 with two runs and Dovi was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Barra, Cilmi, Liotta, May and Fitzpatrick all added one hit a piece for the Hawks.
Gallagher improved to 4-0 on the mound after picking up her second win of the day on the mound. She allowed one hit and struck out one in two and two third innings.
Scott was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI and DelPiano was 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI to lead the Blue Knights in game two. Governale finished 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI and DeMarco was also 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Carlson earned the loss on the mound after going the distance. She allowed 10 runs on 10 hits, walked four batters and struck out four.
