Hawk Field Hockey Falls Just Short in 2-1 Loss to Endicott

Box Score

BEVERLY, Mass. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season, losing a 2-1 heartbreaker to Endicott College (2-1) on Wednesday afternoon at North Field in non-conference action.

The Gulls struck first in the fourth minute when Taylor Matties converted on a shot from the left side. No more scoring would occur in the first stanza, as both teams had a relatively quiet first half offensively. Endicott carried a 4-2 edge in shots heading into the second half, while each squad had a penalty corner opportunity.

Endicott pushed its lead to 2-0 in the 43rd minute, as Alexandra Parese directed a Hannah Thornberg pass into the back of the cage.

After weathering two quick shots in the 61st minute, New Paltz finally got on the board at the 65:30 mark. Senior midfielder Caitlin Ryder (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) notched her first goal of the season when she scored off of a penalty corner taken by junior midfielder Maryana Organidis (Belford, N.J.). Despite earning two penalty corners in the final four minutes of play, the Hawks were unable to produce the equalizer.

On the game, Endicott outshot New Paltz, 15-7, and took eight penalty corners to the Hawks' seven.

Freshman goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y.) suffered her first loss of the year in the cage for the blue and orange, stopping a game-high six shots. Her counterpart, Taylor Teixeira, made four stops.

Saturday marks New Paltz's toughest test so far this year, as the Hawks travel to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., to face 10th-ranked Skidmore College at 1 p.m. The Thoroughbreds' only loss so far this year came at the hands of No. 5 SUNY Cortland.
