HOBOKEN, N.J. – Marguerite Chavez of the Stevens Institute of Technology scored her eighth and ninth goals of the season on Wednesday, as the host Ducks (10-6) edged the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (8-9), 2-1, in non-conference action.
All three goals scored came in the first half, and while Stevens uncorked 11 second-half shots, freshman goalkeeper
Lauren Brennan (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East), who relieved sophomore goalkeeper
Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) at the intermission, stood tall, making six stops to keep the score from swelling in Stevens' favor.
M. Chavez opened scoring in the fourth minute, converting on a pass from Rachel Chavez. In the 12th minute, freshman forward
Alex Gallo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) scored her fifth goal in as many games, taking sophomore defender
Alyssa Stock's (Morris Plains, N.J./Whippany Park) pass from the top of the circle into the back of the cage. Less than five minutes later, M. Chavez recorded her second marker of the game—scoring unassisted—to put the Ducks on top, 2-1, which would later prove to be the margin of victory.
New Paltz was outshot, 16-11, on the contest, and Stevens also held the upper hand in penalty corners by a 16-7 margin.
Pjetri earned the start in goal for the Hawks, making two stops in the first half. Brennan entered the game in the second half and held the Ducks scoreless in 35 minutes of action. Stevens goalkeeper Gabriela Sanchez turned aside five shots in the victory, while Caroline Packowski made a defensive save for the Ducks.
The Hawks close out their regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Turf Field, squaring off with non-conference Kean University at 1 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, New Paltz will honor its two seniors in a Senior Day ceremony.
