NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Darcy Berger had two goals and an assist for visiting Union (N.Y.) College, as the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (5-7) dropped a 3-2 decision to the Dutchwomen (2-9) on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the Turf Field.

After the Hawks staged a comeback behind a pair of goals from sophomore forward Alicia Aragosa (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna), Berger netted her second goal of the game with 1:56 left in the second half, and Union escaped with the 3-2 triumph.

Berger struck first in the 18th minute, collecting a rebound off of a shot from Caroline Moran and burying the ball into the back of the cage. Just 2:29 later, the Dutchwomen made it a 2-0 game, as Berger controlled the ball in transition and fed Nicole Merigliano from the right side, giving Merigliano ample position to deposit the ball into the goal.

The Hawks cut the lead in half in the waning minutes of the first stanza, as sophomore forward Asia O'Han (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) played a ball in from the middle, and Aragosa beat the Union goalkeeper. Aragosa scored once again at 57:45, cashing in on a pass from sophomore defender Alyssa Stock (Morris Plains, N.J./Whippany Park), who played the ball in from the right side.

After Berger had a goal called back with around five minutes remaining, she gathered a rebound off of a shot from Allison Troy and rattled the back of the cage for the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining. Senior forward Maryana Organidis (Belford, N.J./Henry Hudson Regional) also had a goal called back during this non-conference tilt.

New Paltz doubled Union's shot total, holding the upper hand by a 26-13 margin, and each team took eight penalty corners.

Molly McCune stood tall in goal for the Dutchwomen, making 11 stops, and Natalie Engel recorded a defensive save. Sophomore goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) suffered the loss, turning aside four shots in the Hawk cage.

New Paltz finishes up conference play at home next weekend, taking on SUNY Geneseo on Friday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m. before squaring off with The College at Brockport on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m.
