POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – In a meet that came down to the last relay, senior
Christine Rieth (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) showed her elite talent once again, as she helped the State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team (5-1) seal a 153-141 win over cross-river rival Vassar College (2-2) on Saturday afternoon.
Rieth split a 52.79 swimming the anchor leg of that relay, which posted a winning time of 3:44.26. The rest of the relay was comprised of junior
Katina Lown (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot), sophomore
Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and freshman Katherine Buyes (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay).
Rieth and junior
Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) both won three individual events as well. Rieth reigned supreme in the three shorter-distance freestyle events, clocking a 1:59.27 in the 200 freestyle, a 24.76 in the 50 freestyle and a 54.15 in the 100 freestyle. Suzuka showed her strength in the stroke events, winning the 100 backstroke (1:00.84), the 200 backstroke (2:11.13) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.21).
Sophomore
Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) dominated the distance freestyle events, capturing first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:53.41) and the 500 freestyle (5:20.07). Junior
Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) was also an individual-event victor, as she covered the 200 butterfly in 2:16.93.
In addition to their win in the 400 freestyle relay, the Hawks placed first in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Suzuka, junior
Anna Jakubek (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury), Marshall and Lown recorded a time of 1:55.31 in the event, beating Vassar's relay by more than four seconds.
Second-place performances came from Scalise in the 200 freestyle (2:03.07) and the 100 freestyle (56.82), Lown in the 50 freestyle (26.22) and Marshall in the 100 butterfly (1:02.98).
New Paltz enjoys a two-week layoff from competition before it gears up for the 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Winter Championships, which run from Dec. 2-4 at the Nassau County Aquatics Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
