CLERMONT, Fla.
– The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team (2-1) topped Carroll (Wis.) University (2-3), 6-5, before succumbing to Hope College (6-3-1), 6-4, on Monday afternoon at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.

Freshman shortstop Chelsea Kull (Manorville, N.Y.) hit a walk-off bomb against the Pioneers in game one of the day, breaking a 6-all tie in the bottom of the seventh. New Paltz led, 5-1, heading into the seventh, but Carroll pushed four across in the top of the inning to tie the score.

Senior pitcher Courtney Costello (Bayport, N.Y.) did not earn a decision despite pitching four scoreless innings in the circle for the Hawks. She scattered just three hits and struck out two. Sophomore pitcher Gillian Davidoff (Oceanside, N.Y.) received the win in relief.

Carroll's Allison Stanke was tagged with the loss in relief, as she gave up three runs on four hits in 2 1/3 frames of duty. Aimee Ambrose avoided earning a decision, as she drew the start in the circle for the Pioneers and yielded three runs on five hits in 3 2/3 frames of work.

Kull and junior third baseman Samantha Barra (Islip, N.Y.) each went 2-for-4 for the Hawks, with Kull also collecting two RBI and two runs scored. Carroll's offense was keyed by Nicole Leden, who went 2-for-3.

The Hawks led, 2-0, against the Flying Dutch in game two, but Hope scored three in the third and three in the fifth to blow the game open. New Paltz was able to muster runs in the sixth and seventh, but it wasn't enough to best the Holland, Mich.,-based school.

Davidoff was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs on five hits in 2 1/3 frames of duty. Hope's Andrea Reinecke pitched a complete game and was credited with the win, going seven innings while giving up four runs on five hits.

Four different Hawks registered a hit, while Kori Nieuwsma went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Flying Dutch.

The Hawks return to action tomorrow at the NTC Spring Games, taking on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 9:30 a.m. before facing Buena Vista University at 1:30 p.m.
