Box Score
PURCHASE, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team (9-7) was done in by an Amanda Locke walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth, as the Hawks lost, 3-2, in eight innings to Manhattanville College (8-6) on Wednesday afternoon at Manhattanville Field in a non-conference clash.
A second game was scheduled but was called during the bottom of the fourth due to darkness with the score tied at 10 apiece. It is unclear at this moment if that contest will resume at a later date. If it is not rescheduled, it does not meet the minimum inning requirements for a complete game, and all statistics accumulated in the game will not be counted.
The Valiants struck first, as Brianna Scapperotti drove in Lindsay Zekus in the bottom of the first inning. After a few scoreless frames, sophomore second baseman
Melissa Liotta (Brentwood, N.Y.) put the Hawks on top with a two-run double down the left-field line in the top of the fifth.
Scapperotti's single to right plated Zekus in the home half of the fifth, leveling the score at 2-all. After the score remained tied after seven innings, the international tie-breaker went into effect, which gave each team a runner on second to start its at-bat. Junior left fielder
Kristen Schork (Warwick, N.Y.) was thrown out at home with one out in the top of the eighth, and Manhattanville capitalized in the bottom of the frame. A sacrifice bunt moved Ashley Dell to third, and Locke brought her in during the ensuing at-bat.
Senior pitcher
Courtney Costello (Bayport, N.Y.) faced three batters in the first, allowing one run on three hits before being pulled in favor of sophomore pitcher
Gillian Davidoff (Oceanside, N.Y.). Davidoff went seven innings and suffered the loss, yielding two runs—one of which was earned—off seven hits while striking out three.
Samantha Howe pitched a complete game for Manhattanville, lasting eight full frames in the circle. She scattered six hits and permitted two runs while striking out seven.
Liotta went 2-for-3 to pace the Hawk attack, collecting two RBI off of a double. Scapperotti batted 3-for-3 for Manhattanville, while Lynsey Schill went 3-for-4 and Zekus went 2-for-2.
New Paltz has its home opener tomorrow at 3 p.m., taking on SUNY Plattsburgh in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader.
