New Paltz Field Hockey Scores Twice in Second Half; Downs Geneseo, 2-0

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. – After not taking a single shot in the first half, the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (7-4, 2-1 SUNYAC) bounced back with two second-half goals, as the Hawks topped SUNY Geneseo (6-4, 2-1 SUNYAC), 2-0, on Friday afternoon in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest.

After a scoreless first half that featured two Blue Knight shots on goal—both of which were turned aside by junior goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern)—the Hawks rebounded by scoring twice in the second stanza.

Freshman midfielder/defender Jessica Caruana (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) opened scoring in the 53rd minute when she tucked a shot inside the left post. Junior midfielder/forward Danielle Conklin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) earned the assist on the play, as she inserted the initial ball off of a penalty corner. Four minutes later, Conklin added a goal to her statistical line, as she collected a rebound off of a defensive save and rattled the back of the cage. That goal went unassisted.

Despite Geneseo taking six penalty corners and three shots in the final 10 minutes of play, New Paltz was able to hang on for the shutout win.

Geneseo held a 7-4 cushion in shots and a 12-3 edge in penalty corners. Pjetri earned the win in net making four saves, and she received help from senior defender/midfielder Kim Lepore (Stanfordville, N.Y./Stissing Mountain), who notched a defensive stop. Her counterpart, Dayna Mercer, was saddled with the loss, as she permitted two goals without making a save in 56:13 of work. Geneseo's Bridget McGovern made one defensive save.

New Paltz continues SUNYAC action tomorrow afternoon, as it visits The College at Brockport for a 1 p.m. tilt.
