CLERMONT, Fla. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team (0-4) dropped another pair of games at the NTC Spring Games on Sunday, succumbing to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, 2-1, before losing to Plymouth State University, 4-3.
The game against Wisconsin-Platteville featured a pitching duel, as the two sides combined for six hits (Platteville had four and New Paltz had two).
The Pioneers scored the entirety of their runs in the third, as they touched up junior pitcher
Amber Carozza (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro) for three runs on three hits. With two outs, Ashlen Folkers and Colleen Lowe each singled, which set the stage for Nathalie Schattner, the team's clean-up hitter. Schattner uncorked a three-run home run, and the Pioneers gained a 3-0 lead.
New Paltz came back in the home half of the sixth, as junior center fielder
Andrea Feeney (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) singled, advanced to second on a passed ball and came home via a single by senior third baseman
Samantha Barra (Islip, N.Y./Islip). Down to their final chance in the seventh, the Hawks nearly tied the game. Freshman
Noelle Grande (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a passed ball. She then advanced to third on a groundout, and freshman designated player
Meg Brewer (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) drew a walk to put runners on the corners. A wild pitch plated Grande and moved Brewer to second, and Brewer then advanced to third on a groundout. Freshman shortstop
Emily Mouillesseaux (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) ended up grounding out to her opposite number at short, and the Pioneers escaped with the win.
Carozza was tagged with the loss and dropped to 0-2 for the season. She threw a complete game, tossing seven innings while yielding three runs off four hits and a walk while striking out four. Jeni Freiburger was credited with the win for Wisconsin-Platteville, lasting a full seven innings and scattering two hits while permitting two unearned runs. Freiburger also struck out six.
Feeney and Barra were the lone Hawks to boast hits in game one, while Lowe batted 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Pioneers. Schattner collected three RBI on her home run in the third, going 1-for-3 on the game with one run scored.
New Paltz pounded out 10 hits to Plymouth State's six in the nightcap, but the Hawks were unable to push runs across, as eight runners were left stranded.
Jackie Digman put the Panthers on the board in the second with a solo homer, but New Paltz countered, as junior second baseman
Melissa Liotta (Brentwood, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) ripped a triple to lead off the top of the third and came home on a passed ball. The Hawks made it a 2-1 game in the visitors' half of the fifth, as Mouillesseaux crossed on a passed ball with the bases loaded.
Plymouth State erupted in the bottom of the fifth, though, scoring three runs off four hits. A double by Sam Hebert brought in a pair of runs, while Digman plated a third with a double in the ensuing at-bat.
The Hawks had a chance to answer in the top of the seventh, as Barra singled and senior first baseman
Cassie Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. Sophomores
Emily Collazo (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and
Emily Frawley (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) ran for Barra and Barcavage, respectively, and freshman right fielder
Marissa Monaco (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) came to the plate with a chance to tie the game. Monaco doubled to right, plating Collazo, while Frawley was thrown out at the plate to end the contest.
Junior pitcher
Alyssa Oliva (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) suffered the loss in the circle, falling to 0-2 for the season. She lasted 4 2/3 innings, yielding four runs off six hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch while striking out six. Oliva gave way to freshman pitcher
Erika Traina (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), who tossed 1 1/3 frames of scoreless and hitless relief with one strikeout.
Plymouth State's Cynthia Barata was credited with the win, as she worked six innings in the circle and gave up two unearned runs off eight hits and two walks. Nora Galvin came in to pitch the seventh and earned the save, scattering two hits and allowing one run while striking out one.
Liotta and Barra keyed the New Paltz offense with multi-hit games, with Liotta going 2-for-4 with one run scored and Barra going 2-for-3 with a walk. Plymouth State was led by Bekah Jackson, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Digman, who batted 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
