FORT MYERS, Fla. – A strong performance from the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team's bullpen allowed the Hawks (9-6) to take game one of a doubleheader against Western Connecticut State University (4-5) by a score of 13-9 on Monday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. New Paltz was blanked, 10-0, in the nightcap.
Senior
John Schmidt (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) drew the start on the mound for the Hawks in the front end of the twinbill, working four innings. He allowed seven runs—six of which were earned—off five hits while striking out two to collect the win. Sophomore
Dylan Babcock (Vails Gate, N.Y./Cornwall) came into the game in relief and tossed a solid 2 1/3 innings, yielding two runs off a hit and three walks while striking out one. Junior
Chris Chismar (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) came into the game in the seventh inning with one out, and he gave up a hit, issued a walk and notched a strikeout before the side was retired.
The Hawk attack in game one was keyed by junior
Matt Prescia (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) and sophomore
Kenny Gentile (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), each of whom had a multi-hit outing. Prescia batted 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run, while Gentile went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Junior
Matt Carr (Westbury, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) tore up the base paths, stealing four bases. Carr's line also included a 1-for-1 performance at the plate with two walks and a run scored.
With fatigue setting in, game two was a one-sided affair, as the Colonials limited the Hawks to two hits and posted their first shutout of the season.

Steve Pinckney (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) was tagged with the loss on the hill, yielding nine runs—eight of which were earned—off seven hits and three walks while striking out two in four innings of work. Senior
Timmy Chelius (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) hurled two frames of relief and scattered two hits, permitted one run and issued one walk.
The Hawks' only significant offensive contributions came from junior
Steven Morse (East Northport, N.Y./Commack), who went 1-for-2 with a walk and a double.
