BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport (22-10, 7-7 SUNYAC) exploded offensively against the State University of New York at New Paltz softball team (13-21, 5-7 SUNYAC) on Sunday afternoon in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader, sweeping the visiting Hawks by scores of 13-2 and 12-4. Both contests ended in five innings.
After junior left fielder
Andrea Feeney (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) scored on an error by the Brockport first baseman in the first inning of game one, the Golden Eagles erupted for an eight-run home half of the first. With the score at 4-1 in favor of the home team, Meghan Power ripped a grand slam to center field to push the tally to 8-1. Brockport scored once more in the second, while the Hawks got one back in the top of the third after freshman
Shayna Burgess (Smithtown, N.Y./Commack) crossed. Four more runs scored for the Golden Eagles across the third and fourth innings to provide the margin of victory.
Junior pitcher
Alyssa Oliva (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) drew the start in the circle for the Hawks and shouldered the loss, giving up five runs—three of which were earned—off two hits and three walks before the first out was recorded. Junior pitcher
Amber Carozza (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro) threw the remainder of the game and yielded eight runs—four of which were earned—off six hits while striking out three. Brockport's Erin Fleming was credited with the victory, permitting just two unearned runs over five frames of duty.
Sophomore first baseman
Chelsea Kull (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) provided a consistent bat for the Hawks in game one, going 2-for-2, while Kayla Ladd and Power boasted multi-hit outings for the Golden Eagles.
Despite Feeney's 2-for-3 performance at the plate with a run scored in the nightcap, the Hawks were once again outmatched offensively by Brockport.
New Paltz never led in game two, with Brockport scoring four runs before the Hawks reached the board in the fourth off an RBI double by freshman designated player/pitcher
Meg Brewer (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point). The Golden Eagles plated four in the home half of the fourth before a two-run double by junior shortstop
Melissa Liotta (Brentwood, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and a sacrifice fly by senior third baseman
Samantha Barra (Islip, N.Y./Islip) in the top of the fifth made it an 8-4 ballgame. Jessica Stahl hit a two-run single up the middle with no outs in the bottom of the fifth, and Caitlyn Rana pushed across a third run with an RBI single to the shortstop in the ensuing at-bat. Liz Hochman plated Stahl after two straight outs to give Brockport the win in walk-off fashion.
Freshman pitcher
Erika Traina (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) and Brewer combined to scatter 15 hits and allow 12 runs—10 of which were earned—in the circle for the Hawks, while Jean Farrell captured the win for the Golden Eagles, allowing four runs—two of which were earned—off six hits while striking out five over five frames of work.
Rana sported a hot bat in the nightcap, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and a double.
New Paltz returns to action on Wednesday, April 25, when it travels to Schenectady, N.Y., to face Union (N.Y.) College in a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
