Softball Drops Pair of Games to Manhattanville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team (11-6) saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday afternoon at Manhattanville Field, falling by scores of 2-1 and 7-4 to Manhattanville College (11-9) in a non-conference doubleheader.

In game one, Manhattanville broke a 1-all tie in the fifth and held on down the stretch to gain the victory. The Hawks, despite the loss, outhit the Valiants by a 9-4 margin.

New Paltz kicked off the top of the first with back-to-back singles by sophomore catcher Shayna Burgess (Smithtown, N.Y./Commack) and senior designated player Andrea Feeney (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston), and a fly out moved both runners over a base. Sophomore right fielder Marissa Monaco (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) walked to load the bases before Burgess was forced out at home on a fielder's choice. Sophomore pitcher Meg Brewer (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) drove in Feeney with a single up the middle, but Manhattanville forced a groundout in the ensuing at-bat to minimize the damage.

Manhattanville's Kirsten Savage tripled with one out in the home half of the first, and she ended up tying the score by scoring on a passed ball.

After scoreless play in the second, third and fourth innings, Rosaria Callara tripled with one out in the fifth to put the Valiants in a position to score. Savage singled to the pitcher in Manhattanville's next at-bat, driving in Callara. That wound up being the difference in the game, as the Hawks were unable to equalize the tally in the sixth and seventh innings.

Burgess paced New Paltz offensively with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Senior second baseman Melissa Liotta (Brentwood, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) also had a multi-hit outing, going 2-for-3. For Manhattanville, Savage accounted for half of the team's hits, batting 2-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a triple.

Brewer suffered the loss in the front end of the twinbill, permitting two runs—one of which was earned—off four hits and three walks. She also struck out six. Kristen Rodopoulos gained the win, allowing one run off nine hits and two walks while striking out two.

New Paltz never led in game two, as the Valiants outhit the Hawks, 14-8, en route to a 7-4 victory.

It was Manhattanville that got on the board first in the nightcap, plating three runs in the first inning. With one out, Jessica Van Galen ripped a two-run single to left field, plating Callara and Savage. After a Laura Montalto single up the middle, Brianna Scapperotti scored Van Galen with a sacrifice fly, and the Valiants took an early 3-0 lead.

New Paltz drew two runs closer in the top half of the second, with junior first baseman Chelsea Kull (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) coming home on a wild pitch and sophomore left fielder Juliette Verso (Commack, N.Y./Commack) plating Brewer off a single to left field.

Scoring dried up in the middle innings, but the Valiants increased their lead on the strength of a Callara RBI single in the fifth. During the ensuing at-bat, Scapperotti crossed the plate following a wild pitch, and Manhattanville constructed a 5-2 advantage. The Valiants made it a five-run game in the sixth, as Shauna Mulkerin drove in two runs off a single to center field.

New Paltz rallied in the seventh, as Liotta and Monaco led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Sophomore Alex Verso (Commack, N.Y./Commack) took over on the base paths for Monaco before Liotta and A. Verso advanced a base off a ground out. Brewer cleared both base runners with a one-out single down the left-field line, and the Hawks made it a 7-4 game. Manhattanville, however, was able to record the final two outs in consecutive plate appearances to complete the sweep.

Brewer was the lone Hawk to boast more than one hit, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Callara (3-for-4, one run scored, one RBI), Mulkerin (3-for-4, two RBI, double), Van Galen (2-for-3, two RBI, one run scored), Montalto (2-for-4, one run scored) and Cori-Bianca Embler (2-for-4, one run scored) led Manhattanville offensively.

Sophomore pitcher Erika Traina (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) was saddled with the loss, yielding five runs—four of which were earned—off nine hits and four walks while striking out one over 4 1/3 innings of work. Freshman pitcher Katie Rutcofsky (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) tossed 1 2/3 frames of relief, giving up two runs off five hits while striking out two. Alyssa Taylor gained the win in the circle for the Valiants, allowing four runs off eight hits and five walks while striking out four.
