Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) finished with two goals, leading the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team to a 3-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over SUNY Geneseo on Saturday afternoon at Upper Alumni Field.
The Hawks made it a two-goal game just 1:03 before halftime, which ultimately proved to be the difference in the contest. New Paltz finished the game with a 12-4 edge in shots, while Geneseo outgained the Hawks in penalty corners, 6-5.
New Paltz rises to 7-4 overall (3-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next visits the Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 4 p.m. Geneseo falls to 3-8 overall (1-2 SUNYAC) and visits Nazareth College next on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 4 p.m.
Sophomore forward
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) put the Hawks on the board in the 21st minute, burying an unassisted goal. New Paltz rattled the back of the cage again with 1:03 to go before the halftime intermission, as Ackerman scored off a McKeveny feed.
After a few opportunities in its attacking third, New Paltz netted its third goal of the afternoon in the 47th minute, as Ackerman converted on a penalty stroke. The Knights broke up the Hawks' chances for a shutout in the 62nd minute, as senior forward Emily Topping scored off a pass from freshman forward Emma Dempsey. New Paltz prevented Geneseo from mounting a comeback, though, allowing just one shot the rest of the contest.
Junior goalkeeper
Alayna Wageman (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) earned the win in a two-save effort, while junior goalkeeper Dayna Mercer and senior goalkeeper Heidi Deppmeyer combined for eight stops in the loss for Geneseo.
