Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) scored two goals and added an assist, lifting the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team to a 4-2 non-conference win over the Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
McKeveny struck twice in the first half to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime intermission, and after Stevens cut the lead to one just 6:21 into the second stanza, McKeveny assisted on the eventual game-winning goal at 52:31, which was deposited into the back of the cage by senior midfielder
Deirdre O'Neill (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South). Each team went on to score one more goal to spell out the final tally of 4-2.
New Paltz rises to 8-4 overall with the win and visits Kean University on Saturday, Oct. 11, for a 1 p.m. non-conference tilt. Stevens drops to 5-8 with the loss and visits Elmira College on Saturday, Oct. 11, for a 1 p.m. Empire 8 game.
The Hawks opened scoring in the 12th minute, executing a penalty corner to perfection. Four passes ultimately set up McKeveny for the opening salvo, with sophomore forward
Erin Landy (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) earning an assist on the play. In the 21st minute, McKeveny showed expert stickhandling skills, beating two defenders one-on-one before rattling the back of the cage.
After a one-sided first half in favor of the Hawks, Stevens gained momentum early in the second period, as junior midfielder Dailyn Brook cashed in on a penalty stroke in the 42nd minute to make it a 2-1 score. New Paltz pushed the margin back to two in the 53rd minute, as McKeveny found the stick of O'Neill for her third goal of the season.
The Ducks continued to battle, making it a one-goal game in the 60th minute. Freshman forward Victoria Alvarez scored off a deflection, with sophomore midfielder Nolie Prouty providing the assist. New Paltz put the game on ice in the 63rd minute, however, as freshman forward
