BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team lost a pair of one-run games against The College at Brockport on Monday afternoon at the Clark V. Whited Complex Softball Field in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader, losing game one, 4-3, before dropping a 1-0 decision in game two.

New Paltz drops to 7-14 overall and 4-5 in SUNYAC play. The Hawks next host Mount Saint Mary College in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 16, at 3 p.m. Brockport, meanwhile, advances to 14-6 overall and 5-3 in the SUNYAC. The Golden Eagles next visit St. John Fisher College for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, April 16, at 3 p.m.

Game 1: Brockport 4, New Paltz 3

Taking a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth, New Paltz was unable to hold onto the cushion for long, as Brockport plated two runs in the home half of the inning to claim a 4-3 advantage. While the Hawks got runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the seventh, the Golden Eagles induced a foul out before receiving a lineout double play to end the game.

Brockport asserted itself early on, with senior third baseman Emily Dumas launching a two-run homer in the first to give the home team a 2-0 edge. In the fourth, the Hawks leveled the tally, as junior third baseman Meg Brewer (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and junior right fielder Noelle Grande (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) each had RBI base knocks. Brewer struck again in the sixth, uncorking a solo home run to put the Hawks on top, 3-2.

Senior pitcher Amber Carozza (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro) suffered the game-one loss in the circle for the Hawks, allowing four runs (three earned) off 10 hits while striking out one. Sophomore Emily Kolenda picked up the win for Brockport, scattering six hits while permitting three runs and striking out eight.

Brewer's 2-for-3 performance that included two runs scored, two RBI, a double and a home run led New Paltz offensively, while junior center fielder Brianna Ferchen, sophomore left fielder Brianna Harris and junior second baseman Andrea Schell each had two hits for Brockport.

Game 2: Brockport 1, New Paltz 0

In a pitchers' duel, the two teams combined for just eight hits total in the nightcap, but Brockport plated a run in the sixth and once again retired the final New Paltz batter of the game with runners on second and third.

Senior first baseman Sarah Rosenbarker pushed across the only run of the contest, driving a ball into left field in the sixth inning that plated Ferchen. The Hawks challenged the Golden Eagles in the seventh, with Grande doubling to left field Carozza drawing a walk. A wild pitch with two outs allowed the two runners to advance, but Brockport registered a strikeout to end the game.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Rutcofsky (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) was saddled with the loss, yielding one run off four hits and two walks while striking out one. Sophomore pitcher Korey Kibling picked up the win for Brockport, throwing a four-hit shutout.

Grande keyed the Hawk attack with a 2-for-3 outing that included a double, while Rosenbarker batted 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Golden Eagles.
