Spriggs Hits for the Cycle in Softball's 21-0 Win over Brooklyn

Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Junior center fielder Fallon Spriggs (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) hit for the cycle and the Hawks scattered a program-record 26 hits, as the State University of New York at New Paltz softball team won, 21-0, against non-conference Brooklyn College in five innings on Wednesday afternoon at Brooklyn College Field. The second game of the doubleheader was canceled.

Spriggs went 5-for-5 at the plate with four RBI, three runs scored, a double, a triple and a home run. She helped ignite a Hawk attack that combined for 26 hits, which served as the most hits in a single game in program history. The former record of 23 was established 19 years ago to the day on April 13, 1998, against Hunter College in another New York City borough—Manhattan.

New Paltz rises to 9-8 overall with the win and hosts State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe SUNY Fredonia next on Friday, April 15, in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Mary Gray Deane Field. Brooklyn drops to 3-13 with the loss and next hosts the College of Saint Elizabeth in a 5 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow.

The Hawks wasted no time getting on the board, scoring seven runs in the first inning. New Paltz doubled its lead with a seven-run second before plating two runs in the third, two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth. Meanwhile, New Paltz held Brooklyn scoreless for its third shutout of the season.

All told, every Hawk starter registered a hit, and every New Paltz student-athlete that stepped up to the plate scored at least once. Beyond Spriggs' notable performance, senior catcher Jordan Fiore (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) had herself a career day, going 4-for-4 with six RBI, three runs scored and three doubles. Fiore becomes just the third person in program history to hit three doubles in a game, matching the program record.

For Brooklyn, freshman right fielder/first baseman Kyla Gardner hit a double in the second inning, which served as the home team's lone hit of the ballgame.

Senior pitcher Katie Rutcofsky (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) threw a hitless first inning but did not factor into the decision. Sophomore pitcher Lauren Cappello (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) entered the game in relief and struck out a career-high eight batters, permitting just one hit in the winning decision over four innings of work.
