NEWBURGH, NY – Despite trailing 2-0 at halftime, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer squad showed some grit and battled back to knot the match at 2-2, eventually succumbing to a 2-2 double overtime draw against Elmira in the consolation match of the Mount Saint Mary Tournament on Saturday.
After giving up goals to the Eagles (0-3-1) in the 30
th and 37
th minute and finding themselves trailing 2-0 at intermission, the Hawks offense woke up the second half of action.
Junior forward
Danielle Grossi (Sayville, NY/Sayville) notched her second score of the season in the 57
th minute off a shot from 25 yards out to get the Hawks within one.
Junior forward Gabriella Cabello (Hauppauge, NY/Smithtown West) then scored the equalizer in the 67
th minute, off an assist from junior keeper
Katelyn Cordero (Airmont, NY/Suffern), after collecting a loose ball and dribbling around the defense.
Overall, the Hawks outshot Elmira 18-10 with eight shots being on target. Cabello and Grossi led all players with six shots apiece, with Cabello accounting for a team-high three shots on goal.
Junior back
Monica Rouse (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) also notched four shots.
Cordero played 65 minutes, all in the second half and extra time, and tallied three saves. Freshman
Angela Ratka (Farmington, NY/Victor) earned the start and made two saves despite giving up the two first-half goals.
With the tie, the Hawks move to 1-4-1 and will travel to Union on Wednesday, Sept. 14 for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
