SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey to Host No. 15 Kean on Senior Day

| By:
The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team will host No. 15 Kean University on Saturday at 1 p.m. on the North Turf Field.

The game will serve as the team's Senior Day, as seniors Megan Gangewere, Hayley Kim and Justine O'Reilly will be honored prior to the match for their service to the team over the past four seasons.

"They're the epitome of what New Paltz field hockey is," coach Shanna Szablinski said. "All three of them have made leaps and bounds from where they were when they first got here. It's fun to watch a group like this mature and become adults and impact players in your program. We're really proud of their progress and development they've made throughout their time here."

From 2014-16, the trio led the Hawks to a SUNYAC Tournament appearance every season, including a conference championship and NCAA Tournament victories in 2014 and 2015.

SUNY New Paltz enters the match with a record of 4-7, while the Cougars have an undefeated mark of 12-0.

Kean defeated the Hawks 4-3 in their matchup last season. O'Reilly scored two goals and added an assist, while junior Serena Capsello also scored one goal. Gangewere notched 14 saves in the loss.

New Paltz (4-7)
O'Reilly leads SUNYAC with 12 goals and 30 points and is tied for first with six assists. Capsello is tied for sixth in the conference with seven goals, while Kim is second on the team with four assists. Junior Samantha Ackerman and freshman Carly Croteau each have four goals, and sophomore Kaitlyn Gunter has three goals. Gangewere's 126 saves are second in SUNYAC, and her .808 save percentage is ranked third. Ackerman's three defensive saves are tied for second in the conference.

SUNY New Paltz lost its last match to Stevens Institute of Technology by a score of 5-3 on Wednesday, Oct. 4. Capsello, Gunter and Croteau each recorded one goal, while Gangewere tallied 18 saves.

Kean (12-0)
Senior Krista LaMaina leads the New Jersey Athletic Conference with 13 goals and she is tied for second with five assists. Her twin sister, senior Shauna LaMaina, leads the conference with 11 assists and is ranked fifth in goals with nine. Senior Teresa Carr is tied for second in NJAC with 11 goals. Krista LaMaina (310), Shauna LaMaina (29) and Carr (25) are ranked first, second and third, respectively, in the conference in points. Sophomore Bailee Mullen has the lowest goals against average in the NJAC with a 0.68 and is tied for first with four shutouts. Mullen has eight saves on the season, while freshman Megan Houser leads the team with 10.

The Cougars won their last game 4-0 against Ramapo College on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Krista LaMaina tallied two goals, while Shauna LaMaina and sophomore Jenna Patrone each registered one goal. Houser made one save in the shutout victory.

"Kean is a very strong team," Szablinski said. "They had an excellent season last year and are continuing their success this year. They're aggressive, well coached and they have speed and power. What's going to be important for us is that we get on the board early and we continue to press high on defense and take chances inside of our attacking circle. I'm looking forward to a great game."
