In their final dual-meet of the regular season, the State University of New York at New Paltz men's and women's swimming teams came away with a pair of victories and set multiple G. Hal Chase Gymnasium Pool records at Catskill Cup rival SUNY Oneonta on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons now hold a 15-13 edge in the Catskill Cup standings, as the men won by a score of 108.5-96.5 and the women by a 112-91 margin.
"We got a really strong effort by a couple of people that did a great job," SUNY New Paltz head coach
Tom Eickelberg said. "Some people really stepped up where we needed them to."
Hawks sophomore
Cooper Knapp broke both the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 92 seconds) and 200-yard freestyle (1:45.34) pool records, that latter of which stood for almost a decade. Knapp also touched first in the 100-yard backstroke (54.08).
On the women's side, SUNY New Paltz junior
Jaimie Kaefer broke the 200 freestyle pool record with a 1:58.57 mark, which was previously held by former-Hawk Cassidy Griger '16, while Hawks sophomore
Chelsea Angulas set the 100-yard backstroke pool record with a time of 1:00.58.
Angulas was also part of the team's record-setting 200-yard medley relay squad, along with seniors
Molly McCulloch and
Megan Joseph and junior
Katie Donlevy, that clocked in at 1:49.23. The team's 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Angulas, juniors
Nicole Lee and
Kaleigh O'Halloran and sophomore
Sarah Crespo also set a pool record with a 1:42.58 mark.
"Both of our relays really went after those records and we got some really awesome swims on their part," Eickelberg said.
While the women were in front throughout the meet, it came down to the wire on the men's side as the 200 freestyle relay, the final event, would determine the winner. The Hawks quartet of seniors
Barrett Celecki,
Marc Piliero,
Kevin Sales and
Caleb Treadwell notched a first-place finish, and nearly broke the pool record, with a 1:29.27 reading.
"The meet came down to that last relay," Eickelberg said. "Our boys knew what they needed to do and they went out and did it."
Treadwell also contributed by touching first in the 100-yard butterfly (55.56), while Celecki won the 500 freestyle (4:53.56).
The women took the top three spots in the 50 freestyle, as Donlevy, Lee and McCulloch finished with times of 25.12, 26.17 and 27.04, respectively. Donlevy also won the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 1:00.72, and Lee finished first in the 100 freestyle with a 56.41 mark. Crespo placed just behind her, notching a 57.96 reading.
The Hawks will have one final tune-up before the SUNYAC Championships when they travel to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to compete in the Franklin and Marshall College Invite on Saturday, Feb. 3.
