The State University of New York at New Paltz's swimming team will compete in its first home meet of the season Saturday against Adelphi University.
The meet will be the first face-off between the Hawks and the Panthers, and will take place in non-traditional format. Events not included in conference meet line-ups, such as the 600-yard medley relay and 50-yard stroke events, are scheduled.
SUNY New Paltz enters the competition two weeks after its first meet of the season, a double dual meet against Hartwick College and King's College. The women were victorious against the Monarchs 160-95, but fell to the opposing Hawks, 119-139. The men suffered loses to both teams, falling 180-77 to Hartwick and 169-93 to King's.
The women celebrated multiple first place finishes, including junior Chelsea Angulas in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03) and 200-yard backstroke (2:18.80), sophomore Lindsay Kranitz in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.00) and senior Katie Donlevy in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.47) and 100-yard butterfly (1:01.89)
The men enjoyed high finishes in several events. Senior Joe Galante finished second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.99), freshman Ethan Bonney placed third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:37.90), freshman Jared Finn placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.59) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.40).
"Our confidence coming off the last meet is pretty high because we beat King's, but fell short to Hartwick," said Hawks junior Chelsea Angulas. "We had a bunch of personal bests on the team and we did really well at cheering behind the lanes and supporting each other. Our expectations going into our first home meet are really high because we're a team that doesn't like to lose."
Adelphi University competes for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level, but the Hawks welcome the challenge. The Panthers have competed in just one meet this season against Pace University, but fell short on both the women, 104-80, and men's, 91-68, sides. At their conference meet last season, the men and women placed fifth of seven, and ninth of 10 teams, respectively.
"I expect this meet to be a really fast meet, especially because [the] team that we're going against is DII," said sophomore Tom Barnitkowski. "I think it's going to be really quick and our team's going to have some good races. Everyone's going to be touching each other out, and I expect it to be really fun and a fast, good meet."
