Box Score Clinton, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team lost its third consecutive game Sunday, falling to No. 10 nationally ranked University of Rochester, 4-1.
The Hawks (4-4) and the Yellowjackets (9-0) played on the campus of Hamilton College Sunday at Goodfriend Field with the University of Rochester designated as the home team. The Yellowjackets took the early two-goal advantage over SUNY New Paltz, scoring in the 14th and 18th minute, both off penalty corners.
Kaitlyn Gunter countered for the Hawks, getting off a shot from the left wing on a
Samantha Ackerman penalty corner, but University of Rochester goalie, Kate Kujawa, came up with the save.
SUNY New Paltz finally got on the board right before the half. Kujawa was called for the foul in the circle after covering up the ball and not attempting to clear the shot away from Gunter, which awarded the Hawks a penalty stroke.
Jessica Ascencao stepped up to take the stroke for SUNY New Paltz and scored her second penalty stroke goal of the year, along with her team-leading eighth of the season to cut the deficit, 2-1, with less than a minute left in the first half.
However, the Hawks' offense stalled from there and could not find the back of the cage the rest of the way. The Yellowjackets held SUNY New Paltz to just one shot in the second half, which came in the final seconds of regulation, while University of Rochester started creating a cushion of its own.
Nancy Bansbach scored her second of the day off a corner in the 53rd minute and Amanda Strenk added to the lead three minutes later to solidify the 4-1 outcome.
University of Rochester out-shot the Hawks 25-7 in the game and also had the advantage on penalty corners, 11-3.
Ryan Dowling earned her fifth start for SUNY New Paltz and came up with 14 stops.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Saturday, as it starts State University of New York Conference (SUNYAC) play against Morrisville State at home for a 1 p.m. game. To stay up to date with everything #NPHawks be sure to follow on
