GENESEO, NY -- The State University of New York New Paltz women's soccer team fell to nationally ranked SUNY Geneseo 1-0 on the road Saturday. With the loss, the Hawks drop to 4-8-2 overall and 1-4-1 in conference play. The No. 15 Knights improve to 12-2-1 overall and remain unbeaten in the SUNYAC with a record of 6-0-1.
Opportunities were limited for the Hawks, as SUNY Geneseo out-shot SUNY New Paltz 18-4, and took four corner kicks to SUNY New Paltz's three. All of the Hawks' four shots came in the second half.
"It was disappointing to not convert the limited opportunities that we had in our attack," Hawks coach Mike Eckberg said.
In the first half, the SUNY New Paltz defense stood strong against the team with the second most SUNYAC goals scored. Despite giving up nine shots, only three of them were on target, and Hawks keeper Megan Tornatore was able to scoop them all up. Thanks to the solid defensive effort, the game was tied 0-0 heading into halftime.
"I was very pleased with our defensive efforts overall," Eckberg said. "Our mentality, our discipline, and our organization were all solid."
The Knights broke the tie in the 68th minute when Domenica Piccoli scored her ninth goal of the season. From there SUNY Geneseo held off the Hawks who got off two shots and had a corner kick opportunity all in the final 20 minutes of play.
SUNY New Paltz will stay on the road on Saturday when it takes on the Golden Eagles of The College at Brockport at 1 p.m.
"We have to put everything on the line tomorrow to get points,' Eckberg said.
