NEW PALTZ, NY -- Coming off its first conference win of 2019, the State University of New York New Paltz women's soccer team will hit the road for a weekend double header against SUNY Geneseo and The College at Brockport. The road trip marks the first time the Hawks have played away from South Turf Field since Sept. 18 when they defeated Bard 2-1.
SUNY New Paltz will enter the weekend with a record of 4-7-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the SUNYAC. After defeating Oswego State in an overtime thriller Saturday, the Hawks will look to carry the momentum on the road.
"After our win last week, we gained a lot of confidence," SUNY New Paltz sophomore defender Ciara Devlin said. "We've played very well in practice, and we just have to carry that into the games."
SUNY Geneseo will host the Hawks on Friday at 3 p.m. The Knights have an overall record of 11-2-1 and a SUNYAC record of 5-0-1, leading the conference in points. SUNY Geneseo has won four consecutive contests and most recently defeated Buffalo State 3-0.
"Anything can happen in these games," said SUNY New Paltz freshman Ally Donovan. "There's been a lot of really close games and a lot of overtime games. We're going to go out there and play like we would against any other team."
Historically, the Knights have had the Hawks' number, winning 13 of the last 18 matchups, including the last six. SUNY New Paltz last defeated Geneseo in 2012 when it won 1-0.
The Hawks will stay on the road Saturday and take on Brockport at 1 p.m. The Golden Eagles are 8-5-1 overall and 4-2 in the SUNYAC. Most recently they defeated Fredonia State 3-2. The Hawks are 3-8-6 against Brockport in the past 17 matchups. One of those three wins came last year when the Hawks won 1-0 on South Turf Field.
"[In both games], we need to go out with the mentality of winning every ball, especially 50/50 balls in the air and on the ground," Donovan said. "We need to have high pressure and look to punish their mistakes."
Taking a road trip for the first time in a month, the Hawks stressed the need to stay focused in order to compete.
Devlin said, "It's a long bus trip, so we just need to be ready to go."
