Following a tough loss against Hartwick College last weekend, The State University of New York at New Paltz's swim team will try and bounce back when it travels to Adelphi University Saturday in hopes of capturing its first victory of the season.
The New Paltz Hawks lost to the Hartwick Hawks despite some standout swims on both the men's and women's sides. Sophomore Ethan Bonney won the men's 1,000 and- 500-yard freestyle, while also placing in the men's 200-yard freestyle. Bonney's victories helped him in capturing his first ever Hawks Athlete of the Week award. Freshman Kelly Donlevy was also nominated for the award after some stellar swims as well, helping the women win the 200-yard medley relay. Donlevy had a personal best time in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2 minutes 3.92 seconds, which placed her third in the event. Donlevy went on to place second in the women's 100-yard butterfly and first in the women's 200-yard individual medley, which gave SUNY New Paltz some valuable points.Â
"I don't think the score of the Hartwick meet represented us as swimmers. We lost a lot of races by less than half of a second," said Hawks junior Nolan West.
SUNY New Paltz is going up against a Division II team in the Panthers and will need to perform at a high level to capture a win. Thus far, Adelphi has one meet completed against Pace University in which the men's and the women's team captured a win. The Panthers had some standout swims from their men's butterflyers who posted the top two times at the duel meet. They also saw success from their sprint freestylers as the men won both the 50-and 100-yard freestyle events. On the women's side, success came from their two relays, as the Panthers edged out the Setters in the women's 400-yard medley relay as well as the women's 200-yard freestyle relay.Â
The meet will occur on the Panthers' turf, allowing them to have home pool advantage. A majority of college swim teams have six lane pools, however the Adelphi pool only has four lanes, meaning that a large emphasis will be placed on winning races, as less swimmers will score points. Depth points will not be a factor in this meet format, so the team with the most high performing swimmers will win.Â
Each team has one dual meet under their belt and both appear to have advantages in specific areas. For the Hawks men's team, the distance freestyle events have stood out. Bonney holds the fourth fastest 1,000-yard freestyle in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) with a time of 10:20.27. Bonney also holds the fourth fastest 500-yard freestyle in the conference with a time of 5:02.13. Senior Tim Stecher sits at eighthin the conference with a time of 5:13.44.The Panthers men's team seem dominant in the butterfly events. They have had two men post times under 56 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly event.Â
As far as the women's team for SUNY New Paltz, the distance free events have also shown prominence. Freshman Kirsten Giovanniello has posted the third fastest women's 1,000-yard freestyle in the conference with a time of 11:21.35. Giovanniello has also posted the third fastest women's 500-yard freestyle in the conference with a time of 5:31.58. Adelphi's women's team has posted two solid relay swims, which will be crucial for their dual meet against the Hawks as only one relay per event will score.Â
"I think our strongest events will be our distance free as well as our hundreds of stroke, we have some really strong swimmers," said Sarah Crespo.
The Hawks are set to face the Panthers Saturday at 1 p.m.Â
