The State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team (14-6 overall, 5-0 UVC) travels to New York City Friday to face the New York University Bobcats (9-7, 5-1 UVC) and keep its perfect UVC record.
The Hawks come off a loss to the No. 2 ranked team in the nation Springfield College 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23) Wednesday, and such a quick turnaround can help SUNY New Paltz get back to its winning ways and continue to establish itself at the top of the United Volleyball Conference (UVC).
The Hawks took Springfield to a fourth set, but was unable to take advantage of the Pride, as they squandered a two point lead at 23-21 as the set wound down. Consecutive aces by Springfield propelled it to a hard fought win as the last three sets were all decided by fewer than three points.
"We made some free ball mistakes and lost confidence in the first set, and more mistakes in the fourth set cost us the game," said Hawks coach Radu Petrus.
SUNY New Paltz bested the Bobcats 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 25-17) in 2018, but had its 41-match regular season winning streak against Division III opponents ended by NYU in 2017, as the Violets swept the Hawks, 3-0 (19-25, 17-25, 28-30).
The Hawks begin play against NYU Friday at 6 p.m. in New York City.
