Box Score Altamonte Springs, FL – Despite not playing in a competitive match in nearly five months, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team didn't miss a step in its first action of 2019. The Hawks (10-0) added on to their perfect record after defending William Smith College, 5-4 Monday.
"An all-around strong team performance," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Rob Bruley. "Team picked up where they left off in the fall. Second doubles came back from 6-2 down to win a vital point in a great team performance."
The Hawks had a tough task against the Herons (1-2), who defeated SUNY New Paltz last season handily, 7-2. They got the best out of the Hawks in second singles, as Maggie Bonomo earned a 6-7, 2-6 win over
Laura Koob, who was battling through a sore ankle. William Smith also went on to earn points in third singles (2-6, 2-6) and sixth singles (6-0, 0-6, 0-6), but SUNY New Paltz battled in fourth and fifth singles, as
Jenna Grandville grinded out a three set match against Dina Rigas to win, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 in fourth singles.
Courtney Koran then took care of business in fifth singles for the Hawks, beating Charlotte Engebrecht, 6-2, 6-4.
The match came down to the team's two best players in
Trinity Chow and Allie Perron. A close match throughout, Chow held the edge and put away the, 7-6, 7-6 win to seal the win for SUNY New Paltz.
Chow and Koob also won in first doubles, defeating Herons duo Bonomo and Rigas convincingly, 8-2. After William Smith earned a win in third doubles,
Victoria Zezula and
Lindsay Haley battled back from four points down to stun the Herons' Kate Foley and Perron, as they went on to win, 8-6.
The Hawks are back in action Tuesday, as they take on Springfield College in Altamonte Springs, FL at 10:30 a.m.
