SUNY New Paltz Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Framingham State to Close Out Russ Matt Invite

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2  Auburndale, FL — The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team split a doubleheader against Framingham State University in its last day of Florida baseball, beating the Rams 12-0, while losing 8-3 to end the trip with a 4-4 split.

The Hawks will wait to hit the field again for one last non-conference tune-up with New York University before starting State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. With SUNY New Paltz's season now in full swing, the Hawks sit at 7-4 on the year.

"As far as the trip is concerned we did some good things, we played a lot of innings in a very short amount of time, but I feel like we know what the key roles are going to be moving forward," said SUNY New Paltz coach Thomas Seay. "It will be good to get outside and practice, and continue to work on our deficiencies as we prepare for a big SUNYAC series with Oswego next weekend."

The Hawks jumped in front in the first inning against Framingham State University, scoring two runs off an RBI from junior outfielder Matt McGee, which brought home sophomore outfielder David Juechter, and an RBI from senior first baseman Justin Ganca platted junior outfielder Julian Francisco. SUNY New Paltz went scoreless in the second, but came back in the third with much more offense.

After Juechter was hit by a pitch to start the inning, McGee came up for the Hawks with an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0. Ganca hit an RBI single of his own, while senior outfielder Danny Campbell hit a sacrifice fly. Ganca scored on stealing play to move SUNY New Paltz out in front, 6-0.

The hitting continued for the Hawks in the fourth, with Francisco smacking an RBI double and McGee recording an RBI single to extend the lead to 8-0. An RBI single by sophomore catcher Camilo Burgos-Bye put SUNY New Paltz out in front even further in the fifth inning up 9-0.

The Hawks put in the final blow in the sixth inning, gaining an RBI single from sophomore first baseman Dean Stalzer and two runs off hit-by-pitches to go ahead, 12-0. Senior pitcher Mike Delio earned the win after throwing three innings, while giving up one hit and striking out seven batters. Senior pitcher Justin Stybel pitched three innings of one-hit baseball as well, striking out six.

Game two of the doubleheader started off as another offensive onslaught, with SUNY New Paltz scoring three runs in the first off an RBI from Campbell and a two-RBI double by junior catcher Zachary Warenius. The Rams answered in the other half of the first inning however, scoring three runs to tie the game at three.

After the Hawks went 1-2-3 in the second inning, Framingham State University came out in the second with two more runs off an RBI double. The shutout in game one sparked the Rams, continuing their offense throughout the game.

Framingham State University went on to score two more in the fourth inning off an RBI single and another run in the fifth off a wild-pitch to go in front, 8-3. SUNY New Paltz had an opportunity in the sixth inning to come back with the bases loaded and one out, but failed to convert. The Hawks lost 8-3, heading home to New York baseball.

"If we can get quality outings on the mound, which we have for the most part so far, we will be in position to win games," Seay said. "I was told a long time ago that pitching and defense win games, offense just dictates by how much, and that continues to hold true. So if we can get good starts, play quality defense and continue to have good competitive at bats I think we will put ourselves in position to compete in May."
