SUNY New Paltz Men's Volleyball Game Preview: Hawks Travel to NYC to Take on Baruch

| By:

The State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team (7-2, 0-1 UVC) faces Baruch College (5-4) Thursday in New York City, as the Hawks look to scale up the rankings once more to gain the No. 1 ranking in the nation.

"We play with Baruch College today," said SUNY New Paltz coach Radu Petrus. "They are one of the top CUNY volleyball teams, but not a top DIII volleyball team."

The Hawks come off a weekend at the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic in which they split their two games against Springfield College (10-1) and Rivier College (4-2), losing 3-2 to the Pride and bouncing back with a 3-1 win over the Raiders the following day.  Matthew Grace

The loss to Springfield was SUNY New Paltz's second in a row, which dropped the Hawks from the No. 1 national ranking to No. 3 behind the aforementioned Springfield, and Vassar College -- the only two losses the team has suffered so far this season.

"To deserve the No. 1 spot in the nation we have to win against the top competition in the nation," Petrus said. "The good news is we have these volleyball teams in our future schedule, so there is a chance for us to get back that No. 1 spot."

SUNY New Paltz lost both games in five sets, and against the Pride were unable to come away with a crucial win after leading 2-1 in the game. The Hawks hit a negative .061 percent in the fourth set, and a poor .062 in the final set as Springfield pulled away early, 7-1, in front of their home crowd, which was enough to spur them on to victory.

SUNY New Paltz is hitting .296 percent and averaging 11.7 assists per set at the moment. The Hawks have aced a total of 56 times and committed 169 errors from behind the stripe, something they will have to get better at to win close games. Defensively, they are recording 8.4 digs per set, compared to opponents' 6.6.

The Hawks tip-off against the Bearcats at 7 p.m. on Thursday night at the ARC Arena
