Box Score 4 Clermont, FL — The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team concluded its spring break trip competing in the PFX Spring Games by splitting its final two games Friday, defeating Washington College (MD), 5-2 and falling to Springfield, 5-0.
Against the Shoremen, the Hawks had another solid pitching performance by
Lindsay Roman who improved to 4-1 on the season after pitching through 5.2 innings, giving up just eight hits and one run —none earned — with two strikeouts in the 5-2 victory.
Jillian Harrison threw the last 1.1 innings and was awarded the save after closing out the win.
SUNY New Paltz took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to
Sydney Bonewit who knocked a one-out single then stole second to put herself in scoring position. A ground out by
Julia Mastrup moved her over to third and Bonewit scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
The Hawks bats stayed hot in the following inning, as
Jackie Rometo ignited the offense with a lead-off double to left but was eventually out on a double-play made by Washington College a batter later.
Madison Maggs kept the inning alive with a single, and following a walk by
Jillian Shelbourne,
Kelly Marmorowski stepped into the box pinching hitting for
Carol Ann Campsey and delivered an RBI single to score Maggs.
Jessica Graepel added on with a two RBI double to left to bring the SUNY New Paltz lead to 4-0.
Smart base running in the fourth allowed the Hawks to tack on an insurance run.
Rhionna Bianchini had a base-hit then stole second and eventually took third on a passed ball. Rometo walked in the following at-bat then stole second to put both runners in scoring position and Bianchini came home on an RBI ground out by
Katie Quagliana.
The Shoremen earned a run back in the sixth and seventh, but Harrison came in to get Washington College's last batter in the sixth looking for a strikeout and pitched out of a jam in the seventh, with two ground outs.

Springfield had a big second inning, which proved the difference in game two for SUNY New Paltz. Waldon earned the start and pitched 1.2 innings, allowed four hits, four earned runs with a walk and two strikeouts. Quagliana threw the final 4.1 innings and allowed two hits, one run with two strikeouts.
After Quagliana got the final out in the second, she allowed just one more run in the bottom of the third, giving up a two-out RBI double but shut down the Pride offense there.
The Hawks struggled with timely hits throughout the game, leaving eight runners on. They totaled seven hits through seven innings with Shelbourne leading the way, going 2-for-3.
After SUNY New Paltz had its games against Wesleyan University and Arcadia canceled due to rain Wednesday, the Hawks rescheduled matchups against Bethel University, University Wisconsin-River Falls and Clarkson University Thursday, which was open as their originally scheduled day off.
Against the Royals of Bethel University, located in Arden Hills, Minnesota, SUNY New Paltz suffered just its fourth loss on the season after falling, 7-1.
The Royals took a six-run leading entering the fourth after scoring two in the bottom of the first, second and third innings, before adding one more in the bottom of the sixth. The Hawks were held scoreless until the seventh inning, as a fielding error allowed
Nicole Greco on to lead off the top half. After advancing to second on a ground out,
Katie Quagliana plated Greco on an RBI single down the right side.
Sydney Bonewit helped extend the game for SUNY New Paltz with a two-out walk, but a strikeout in the following at-bat ended the game at 7-1 in favor of Bethel.
The Royals Kayla Simacek earned the win after pitching six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and allowing just one hit and no walks. Ella Roberts pitched the seventh and allowed just one hit and a walk with two strikeouts.
Quagliana registered both of her team's hits as she finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. She also got the start and threw 2.1 innings, allowed eight hits and six earned runs.
Jillian Harrison finished the game and allowed three hits, two walks, one earned run and struck out one.
SUNY New Paltz bounced back in its final slate of games of the day, earning a nine-inning, 4-3 win over the Falcons before defeating the Golden Knights, 10-2 in five innings.
Roman started against UW-River Falls and pitched through seven innings, allowing just nine hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts and a walk. She didn't allow a run until the sixth, which gave the Falcons the initial 1-0 lead. The Hawks answered in the bottom of the inning with Rometo starting off the inning with a lead-off double and advancing to third on smart base running. Quagliana hit in Rometo in the next at-bat on an RBI single to left, but SUNY New Paltz couldn't add on, as a sac bunt to advance Quagliana into scoring position was followed by a ground out and a pop-out to end the inning with the game tied at 1-1.

In the top of the eighth Roman was replaced by Waldon after the Falcons took a 3-1 lead. Waldon pitched out of the inning, getting a fly-out, while forcing UW-River Falls into a double-play thanks to a nice play by Bonewit in center. The Hawks showed their resiliency in the bottom of the inning as Shelbourne stepped up to knock a two-out, two RBI single to right to plate Mastrup and Quagliana to tie the score.
Waldon worked her way through four batters to keep the Falcons scoreless, which set the table for SUNY New Paltz to win in walk-off fashion. Graepel, pinch-hitting for
Juliet Bernstein, placed a well-executed bunt to advance Bonewit — who was placed on second to start the inning — to third.
Carol Ann Campsey then ended the game on an RBI single to left to bring Bonewit home and solidify the 4-3 victory.
Quagliana again led her team offensively, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a run and an RBI. Maggs and Campsey were the only other Hawks to have a multi-hit day with Maggs hitting a double in the first inning.
Waldon earned the win, as she pitched the final two innings and allowed no hits, no runs and one walk.
SUNY New Paltz concludes a successful PFX Spring Games Tournament at 9-5 overall, going 7-5 through its 12-game slate in Clermont, FL. The Hawks return home and will have a full week to prepare before their first set of games back in New York March 25 in a doubleheader matchup at Farmingdale State March 25.
