Galloway, NJ — The State University of New York at New Paltz three-game winning streak came to an end Monday as the Hawks lost, 18-4 on the road to the Stockton Ospreys.
SUNY New Paltz (3-2 overall) struggled gaining enough possessions on offense throughout the game, but really dug itself into a hole after the first quarter. The Hawks turned the ball over 21 times, five in the opening 15 minutes and had a difficult time clearing the ball as well when they did make a stop. They finished 14-for-23 on clears, including just 2-for-6 in the first quarter. The Ospery's in turn took advantage, getting up big early at 9-2 at the end of the opening period.
The Hawks had their first possession on their offensive end around the 12-minute mark of the first and capitalized with
Kaitlyn Shaw, who was named SUNYAC Offensive Athlete of the Week after 15 goals in the last three games, evading three defenders on her way to her team's first goal of the game. Stockton answered though with a 5-0 run as it continued earning free position opportunities. Seven of their goals came on the hash, making all but one on the day.
Julia Longo broke up the stretch, finding her first of three goals of the day off a feed from Shaw with 1:44 left. The Ospreys won back possession and earned another free position opportunity, this time SUNY New Paltz goalie Gabby Tommaso made a nice stop on the play, but Stockton picked up the ground ball to get another chance on offense.
Alex Coyle made a nice play batting down a pass from X to create a turnover, but the Hawks had trouble clearing the ball and the Osperys capitalized with a goal with 13.8 seconds left. The hosts weren't done, however, as they won the ball off the draw and scored in transition with 1.8 seconds to spare to take a commanding seven-goal lead into the second quarter.
The Hawks did a better job in the second half but couldn't generate enough offense with Stockton goalies Jordan Hawkes and Daniela Elliott combining for seven saves. Tommasso finished with three stops while
Mollie Harris played the final 30 minutes in cage for SUNY New Paltz and totaled two saves.
Longo led the Hawks offensively with three goals on three shots, while Shaw had one attempt, which went in, and an assist, while adding a draw control and a ground ball.
Camryn Ryder totaled a team-high five draw controls.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action March 25 as it begins SUNYAC play on the road at Oswego State for a 1 p.m. start.
