Shaw and Longo Set Milestones as SUNY New Paltz Women's Lacrosse Dominates Mount Saint Mary, 18-2

New Paltz, NY — An 8-0 start produced a quick 18-2 win for the State University of New York at New Paltz Wednesday on North Turf Field over visiting Mount Saint Mary College.

Records were broken along the way, as Hawks junior Kaitlyn Shaw surpassed 100 career points, while freshman attacker Julia Longo set a new single game record with seven assists, previously held by teammate Maddie Gillis.

For Shaw, she joins just 10 others to break into the 100-point club and after her seven-point performance Wednesday currently sits at 11th all-time, just one shy of breaking into the top 10 and is just 15 goals shy of joining the 100-goals club, currently at 85, ninth-most in program history in less than three seasons played thus far.

"It means a lot to me," Shaw said of getting to the 100-point milestone. "It means the hard work I put in the last two years has really paid off, and it just makes me realize how great of teammates I have. They've helped me become the player that I am, and I appreciate them every day."

Shannon Brosnan got the offense going on the Hawks first possession of the game after winning the opening draw. Shaw then made history a minute later, driving a finishing with a goal for her 100th career point. Their third goal stemmed off a free position save by Gabriella Tommaso allowing the Hawks to run in transition with Shaw taking advantage on a drive and rip for her second of the day.

SUNY New Paltz then rattled off five more, the last coming in transition with Gillis feeding Mia Baldinger to push the score to 8-0 by the end of the first.

The Hawks found their first goal of the second quarter three minutes in, as Longo fed Gillis for her first of the season. Shaw won the ensuing draw resulting in another attempt on frame by Gillis on the offensive possession, but the shot hit pipe with Longo finding the loose ball and placing the put-back into the net to create a running clock with the lead at 10-0. SUNY New Paltz scored three goals in the final five minutes after winning consecutive draws by Brosnan and Shaw. Morgan Atwater finished on a feed from Longo to create an 11-0 advantage, then Shaw found Emily Monroe a minute later for a score before Shaw capped the run with an unassisted attempt to bring the lead to 13-0 at halftime.

SUNY New Paltz kept the Knights scoreless at the end of the third quarter and added two more goals from Atwater and then Gillis off a save by Mollie Harris, which led to a good clear, and a feed by Monroe to Gillis as the third quarter whistle sounded.

Mount Saint Mary finally got on the board at the 11-minute mark of the fourth, but Camryn Ryder answered immediately with an assist from Longo. After the Knights scored their second, the next five minutes was at a stalemate until Brosnan picked up a turnover off a failed clear by Mount Saint Mary, leading to the record assist by Longo who waited for Shaw to get back into the eight to send a short pass her way with the reigning All-Region selection easily finding the back the net for the score with three minutes to go in the game. Shaw added one more in the final minute to finalize the 16-point victory.

The Hawks out-shot the Knights, 31-19 and picked up more ground balls (22-15), was good on more clears (15-16, 11-17) and won the turnover battle (15-16). Eight different Hawks secured at least a point in the game. Longo led the way with nine, just one shy of tying the single-game program record as she finished with two goals and seven assists. Shaw followed with six goals and one assist, while Gillis totaled two goals and two assists. Brosnan and Ryder each pulled down six draw controls apiece.

SUNY New Paltz improved to 4-2 overall as it heads into its first SUNYAC game of the season Saturday on the road against Oswego State.

"We're feeling excited for Oswego," Shaw said. "It's not only our first SUNYAC game, but it's a big one for us and we feel that we've been preparing and we're ready to take them on. We think we can beat them this weekend."
