Purchase, NY — Entering Sunday's game, the State University of New York New Paltz was in search of some more offense as it sought to put an end to a four-game losing skid.
The Hawks answered with a season-high four goals in a rout of hosting Manhattanville to come away with a 4-1 win and up their overall record to 2-4 with the victory.
Their offense was led by their young freshmen forwards as
Bryan Lizama scored his first of two collegiate goals of his career, while
Brandon Dhanoolal continued to pace the team in points by adding his second of the season with
Ryan Zindler earning a point after assisting on his team's third goal of the match.
SUNY New Paltz went into the half with a 1-0 lead thanks to Lizama who scored his first career goal. Bringing the ball down near the top of the box, Lizama weaved his way through two defenders to create some space and rip a left-footed dagger bottom right corner to give his team the goal advantage in the 21st minute.
The Hawks limited Manhanttanville in dangerous chances inside its defensive third with keeper
Christian Micheli doing well to own his box on balls played in. The senior tallied all three of his saves within the first 45 minutes of play.
The game opened up in the second, as SUNY New Paltz continued putting pressure of the Valiants back line. It totaled 10 shots in the second half and soon doubled its lead following a goal by junior captain
Alex Wyant off an assist from graduate student
Brian Boylan in the 60th minute. Dhanoolal then all but put the game away after scoring the Hawks' third goal of the game in the 74th, as Zindler fed a pass that led to the score.
Manhattanville broke through with a goal in the 83rd, but Lizama ended any type of doubts of a three-point result for SUNY New Paltz as he scored again off an assist from junior
Colin Brant less than five minutes later.
The Hawks entered the game with just two goals scored on the year, having been shut out three times. They averaged less than nine shots per game through their first five contests but broke out with an explosive performance Sunday, out-shooting the Valiants, 20-14, including 12-4 in shots on target.
Lizama led the way with four shots, three on frame with two goals in 75 minutes. Boylan and Dhanoolal followed with three shots apiece, both playing nearly 60 minutes. Brant also put on three shots in 64 minutes off the bench, two on frame with his first assist of the season.
SUNY New Paltz looks to build on its win Wednesday when it travels to Hoboken, NJ to face Stevens for a 6 p.m. night cap.
