SUNY New Paltz Athletics, Wellness and Recreation Students Honored with Student Affairs, Distinguished Senior Awards

Student-Athletes Tommy Kreider, Letisha Perez, Gaby Treble, Morgan Hammell, along with Wellness & Recreation Supervisors John Intieri and Kayla Friscia honored by University as Distinguished Seniors

New Paltz, NY — State University of New York New Paltz seniors Tommy Kreider, Letisha Perez, Gaby Treble, Morgan Hammell, John Intieri and Kayla Friscia were awarded the Distinguished Senior in Student Affairs award this past Tuesday due to their work within the department and the campus community as a whole.

Kreider, Perez, Treble and Hammell were all faces of the athletics department throughout their time at SUNY New Paltz. Kreider, a senior captain on the Hawks baseball team, will leave as the most decorated player to ever suit up for the program, winning numerous athletic accolades to go along with his prowess in the classroom as a three-year SUNYAC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll recipient, SUNYAC Scholar Athlete and SUNY Scholar Athlete. Treble, who helped the women's soccer team win a SUNYAC title this past fall, is one of the most dynamic forwards to suit up for the program and not only served in a leadership position for her team, but also for the department as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President while also excelling in the classroom as a three-time SUNYAC Commissioner's Academic List recipient.

Perez, a three-time All-SUNYAC select and former All-Region pick was involved in numerous parts of campus, including working within the Athletic Department in a multitude of capacities and serving as a team captain this past fall for the Hawks women's volleyball team. Hammell, meanwhile, was a part of two SUNYAC Championships as a member of the women's basketball program and achieved academic success as a three-time SUNYAC Commissioner's Academic List recipient and Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society inductee, while also serving in SAAC the last two years including this year as the vice president of the student-athlete run organization.

Intrieri worked on the Wellness and Recreation side of the house as an intramural official and score keeper for the last three-plus years and was promoted to building supervisor in the fall of 2024, the highest-level position for a student worker within the Wellness & Recreation Department. Along with his role in the Wellness & Recreation Department, he is the president of the newly created club soccer team and is on the executive board for the biology club, geology club, environmental science club and cosmic club. Intrieri is graduating from SUNY New Paltz with a geology degree and plans to attend graduate school to pursue a master's degree and in the meantime will work for New York State at a camp teaching kids about geology and astronomy.

"John has been a huge part of our department and a huge help to me whether it was intramural's, athletic or non-athletic events, or just standard supervising of the AWC," said SUNY New Paltz Assistant Wellness & Recreation Director Skyler Cain. "John is the longest tenured student worker in our department and has been working with us since he was a freshman. It has been a pleasure working alongside him for the last two years and I am extremely excited to see where he goes in life."

Friscia was a AWC desk monitor for the last two years and was quickly promoted to building supervisor this past fall showing her reliability, work ethic and dedication throughout all her roles.

Graduating with a degree in Early Childhood Education, Friscia served as the vice president of the Girl Gains Club where she is responsible for planning events and various other sessions.

"Both of these individuals have been a huge part of Wellness & Recreation and have helped us promote and support our goals as a department," Cain said. "They will be extremely missed, and I am certain they will be successful in their future endeavors after SUNY New Paltz. They're both extremely deserving of this award and I am glad that I had a part in their growth and success here at New Paltz."
