Anthony Gonzalez Joins SUNY New Paltz Baseball Staff as Lead Assistant Coach

New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz Baseball program hired its new lead assist ahead of the 2026 season in former SUNY Oneonta and St. Thomas Aquinas alum Anthony Gonzalez.

Gonzalez joins the Hawks Baseball program after spending last season as the Interim Head Coach at Saint Peters University in Jersey City, NJ where he served as the Associate Head Coach for two years prior.

"I'm really excited to add coach Gonzalez to the staff," said SUNY New Paltz coach Thomas Seay. "He has tremendous experience in our conference as a standup player at Oneonta. He's also had coaching stops at the Division II and of Division I level. I believe his wealth of experience will be a tremendous addition, not only to the players currently in our program, but on the recruiting of future Hawks. I'm looking forward to seeing how this program's development continues under his tutelage."

Gonzalez has been coaching for the past five years after spending a five-year collegiate career spread across stints at SUNY Ulster, Concordia College, Saint Thomas Aquinas College and SUNY Oneonta. He led the Dominican University junior varsity program and assisted the varsity team for the Chargers for one season before taking over as the Director of Baseball Operations for In the Zone, leading more than a dozen youth programs, implementing camps, clinics and individual lessons while overseeing day-to-day operations.

Gonzalez then joined the Peacocks staff in August 2023 as the Associate Head Coach, leading recruitment of the 2024 and 2025 classes, while coaching hitters and catchers. During the 2024 season, he guided the program to one of its highest to-date, winning 16 games over the course of their season.

Gonzalez joins the Hawks after the team's second-straight playoff bid, just two years removed from hoisting a SUNYAC title for the first time in program history. He takes the reigns from long-time assistant Brandon Rivera who was the lead assistant/pitching coach for the last eight years.

SUNY New Paltz will kick off its 2026 campaign in Virginia Beach Feb. 20 for a three-game series against Virginia Wesleyan.
