Box Score
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior forward
Sarah Schloss (Brant Lake, N.Y.) set the program's all-time record for points when she scored in the 45th minute, lifting the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (6-5, 2-2 SUNYAC) to a 3-1 non-conference win over host Vassar College (2-9, 0-3 Liberty) Tuesday afternoon at Weinberg Field.
Schloss, who owns 69 points to her credit on her career, broke Patricia Erickson's former program mark of 68. Erickson suited up for the Hawks from 2002-04.
Both sides struggled to create scoring chances in the opening 20 minutes of the contest, adjusting to the constant flow of light rain.
Junior forward
Maryana Organidis (Belford, N.J.) put the Hawks on the board in the 26th minute, redirecting a pass from senior defender
Alyssa Finck (Hudson, N.Y.) off a through ball. Junior forward
Stacey Miller (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) doubled the tally just two minutes later, tipping in a ball played in by Organidis. Vassar's Rebecca Smith sliced into the New Paltz lead at 30:03, ripping a shot into the right-hand side of the cage.
At half, the Hawks held a 2-1 advantage on the scoreboard, but Vassar had outshot the blue and orange, taking six shots to the visitor's four.
Schloss showcased her speed and persistence on a breakaway 10 minutes into the second stanza. After cutting through the defense, she uncorked a shot from around 15 feet out, which pounded the back of the goal.
Vassar's Jessica Lance nearly put away a chance in the 55th minute, but freshman goalkeeper
Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y.) extinguished the opportunity, preserving the 3-1 New Paltz edge. The visiting Hawks would hang on for the final 15 minutes and hold the Brewers shotless for the remainder of the game.
On the afternoon, Vassar outshot New Paltz, 12-8, but the Hawks took nine penalty corners compared to the Brewers' five.
Pjetri gained the win in between the posts, collecting her fifth win of the year by stopping seven shots. Maggie Brelis sustained the loss, making one save in net for Vassar.
New Paltz continues non-conference play on Friday, Oct. 8, when it travels to Montclair, N.J., to face Montclair State University. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
